Flies! ? ? ?

I counted 10 in my lounge bay window yesterday evening and though I managed to swat several last night, there seemed more this morning!
I had bought one of those door curtains the last time it was hot, but then realised that due to having PVC doors, there is nowhere to fix it to! I haven't been able to find the right kind of hooks to stick on the door surround - the old cup hook type that we used to use don't seem to be around any more.
Still, the flies are giving my cat some entertainment - he loves , chasing them, or just stamping on them with his big paws and then apparently they are a nice snack !

Yes, horrid flies pestering me in the garden as well. It’s years since I’ve seen so many. I daren’t leave the kitchen door open or they’re buzzing round and getting into the living room. Big spiders galloping across the carpet too, eeeeeeek.

I’ve noticed fruit flies during the last week. No idea why they’ve suddenly appeared as I’ve kept all fruit in the fridge over the summer. I wait for them to land on my pale cream cupboard doors then give an almighty swat with an old tea towel. I can get several that way. It must have worked as they seem to have gone now but it’s a mystery why they arrived in the first place.

Funnily enough, this is the first time for years that I haven't had a kitchen full of fruit flies; I usually have dishes of vinegar and washing up liquid scattered around, to drown them in.

We have small cluster flies that appear from under the eaves at the back every spring. They warm themselves on the back wall & disappear, returning in autumn.
This week however I vacuumed up 64 big dead flies in front bedroom on 1 day. They appear on an afternoon & find their way in despite closed windows. I’m beginning to think that a critter has died in roof space, but I’m not agile enough to get in there. Hoping today’s cooler weather will help.

Great now because the worst of the fly season is over for me and I can leave the patio door open without constant large flies coming in. I have noticed that in the evening there are quite a few Daddy Long Legs coming in if the door is open, but will tolerate one or two of them it is the flies I hate.

We haven’t had many but the Daddy LongLegs have started here. Thankfully our dog wolfs down his food as soon as it is put in his dish.

We can never leave doors or unscreened windows open here once winter is over, they descend in droves. They have live offspring, too. I can’t stand the things and I freak out if we even get one in the house. Most of our windows have screens, though, as they do in Australia.

Very few flies in North East Scotland. I saw 2 yesterday and my windows were open all day.

Many birds depend on flies and other insects to feed their chicks and themselves. The population of birds is way down because insects are sprayed so parent birds watched their chicks starve in their nests.

Keep flies out, e.g. with netted windows, if you can't keep them out any other way, and enjoy watching the birds.

You only get maggots if flies are able to lay eggs on uncovered waste. If you keep kitchen bins securely covered and then double bag said rubbish when you transfer to the outside bin there shouldn’t be a problem!

Had terrible trouble with fruit flies this year and tried traps of vinegar, swatting them, putting fruit in cupboards and the 'fridge and not much better! Think they will go away when it is cooler.

My conservatory looks like a fly graveyard today! On the floor, windowsills, furniture. Little corpses everywhere. Yuk. I will clean it up later when the decorator has left. We have moved a few things from the dining room into the conservatory so as we move things back we can have a good clean. We have spiders too. I saw one the size of a dinner plate on the landing last night. Fortunately it went behind a bookcase.

I noticed that Callistemon. My conservatory is full of dead flies and wasps without me doing anything. It’s pretty horrible. Anyone know why they die? I do rescue any bees that get in.

My bugbear at the moment is fruit flies in the bathroom but mainly the kitchen. They appear overnight. I have one of those electronic tennis racket zappers which is quite satisfying to use when something or someone has annoyed me. How sad is that!

I am wondering MaybeMaw if what you are seeing is cluster flies which proliferate at this time of year and quite literally crawl out of window frames. Dd had this problem with her new house.

I know that you have a bin cleaner, JaneJudge you were very supportive when I had a feud with my bin cleaner (the old one, not the new one). Regular readers may be delighted to hear that the bin saga has now been rectified )

We’ve just moved into a rented property and the landlord has left these plugins in each room. I thought initially they were WiFi boosters but on googling it turns out they are pest repellent, no idea if they work on mice as have seen no evidence of them but the flies that come in( and there are loads just now) seem to get very slow and die very quickly. The dogs seem not to bothered by them. They are available on Amazon if anyone is interested.

I always find bluebottles are more intelligent than flies/no joke.
They always go out the same way, they come in, so keep their entrance/exit free for them to leave. Flies unfortunately just go round and round in circles around the light fittings usually.
Maddening isn't it.

??? you mentioned the m word Jane I won’t go near our black bin, that’s MrJ’s job. We’ve had a lot of flies here this week too, I try and shush them out of the window, then the spray comes out, yuk and double yuk.

Get a bin cleaner. I mentioned that I had one earlier this year, and was roundly mocked!

(Btw this isn’t to you Jacky, but rather anyone who has a fly problem)

I thankfully have a bin cleaner!

We hang "The Buzz" fly traps outside the conservatory windows and doors and since doing that we've had no flies in the house.

We had a dog who used to catch wasps and sometimes got swollen jowls.

My DH throws all the doors and windows open in a vain attempt at getting them to fly out again. You can't fault his logic, but jyst as many fly in as fly out.

Bless her, Rosie does her best to catch them , but with little success!

Seems to have worked for the fruit flies, but not the blue bottles.
