Composite front door

Hi all you DIY ers.
Has anyone painted a composite front door? It isn’t very old (but , out of guarantee - of course). It hasn’t worn very well and we have coated it with Polytrol a few times but it never lasts long. Reviews say it isn’t advisable to paint this type of door.
Any advice please?

Find someone who uses a spray system. My GS has sprayed several composite front doors there is a special suitable paint and they come out a treat it takes longer to mask up the door than to spray it. It is part of his job I might add.

A friend of ours sprayed her brown composite door a lovely pale green colour about five years ago, it still looks great. I’ll ask her about it when I next see her and come back with the info.

Btw, her door is east facing. Could be a factor. If south facing could be open to fading or even heat damage.

Thanks tanith and Pollytickle ?

A lot of people are using the Frenchic paint with lovely results. Keep thinking I’d like to do my front door a calamine lotion sort of pink - but I have a lot of indoors painting still to do!

If it’s got textured wood grain finish it will be difficult to get it prepared properly for new paint, if it’s flat or gentle curves sand it lightly to key the paint, mask everything up and spray paint it just like a car.

If it faces the sun use a light colour, dark colours heat up and fade much faster, some experience of spray painting will be needed.

There are companies that spray composite doors and windows with a special paint, it is guaranteed for 10 years so worth looking at.

Hi all who responded to my request for advice,
Yesterday we decided to give the door a thorough wash with sugar soap and after it had dried, light,y sanded it down and then put a coat of restorer on. We soaked the brass knocker and letter box in baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice and it really does look like a new door. Just hope it lasts a while.
If it fades and wears again we will rethink painting it.
Thankyou all for taking time to respond. ??
