House and home

Do you still have a fireplace in your lounge.

After the new year I would like to refurbish my lounge, its only small with a staircase in the lounge.

The house is 21 yrs old so reasonably modern.

We had a fireplace put in that was same as the show house, but now it seems to look old fashioned.

I kp toying with the idea of getting rid of the fireplace and maybe putting TV in its place. But I do like a focal point.

My fire is also a piddly thing and outdated.

Have you got rid of your fireplace? Regretted it.

I cannot access replies but I love reading your posts. Thank you

Love your fireplaces! I'm a fan of old-fashioned things, particularly from UK. I had our wood-burning fireplace inspected, paid $2600.00 to have it parged and made safe. My husband wanted a fire two years before he passed away.
Keep your pics coming!

Bikergran I am considering the same thing and we have a similar age house with a nice enough fire surround but a naff coal effect electric fire stuck in front which we never use. The mantlepiece is basically just a shelf. No chimney breast, no chimney.
I have an obscenely large TV in the corner which I love but I am very tempted to rip out this false fireplace and out a nice TV shelving unit there. This will give me a better head on viewing angle and more shelf space, as well as more balance to that wall.
If I had a real fire like some of the lovely ones on here, I would definitely keep it but I haven't. I can see your dilemma

Don’t know how to add a pic. We have 4 fireplaces but only use one, which has a wood burner and if we leave the door open keeps the rest of the house toasty warm.

Electric coal effect fire, it gives a cosy glow. We sometimes have just the coal effect on.

We have a fireplace in our pre-war house, and love having a fire. We mainly collect wood on our walks and let it seaon, though that does need topping up with the occasional delivery from a local supplier.

Thank you PinkCosmos just went to the snowman one on Sky, DH is not amused ??

SueDonim photo reminds me of someone I knew when I lived in Nigeria. She missed home a lot and so she found a programme for her tv which played a continuous film of flames in a lovely fireplace. It was incongruous to go to her house and sit in 30+C temps, with AC on and watching a fire!
?

You can buy a quite a few DVD's of roaring log fires. They run for about an hour. I have seen them on pub TV's.

You can also download one from Sky called Christmas Scenes (I think). The Sky one also has snowy windows etc. I always put my log fire recording on the telly at Christmas. It is surprising how it warms the room up - I know it is psychological but it really does feel warmer grin

Yes bikergran, we have a wood burner, only tiny but gives off good heat.
Good luck with your decision making, it’s always fun redoing a room

PollyTickle Wed 03-Nov-21 11:30:01

Yes, very quirky.

FannyCornforth Wed 03-Nov-21 11:16:20

Why, thank you Polly
Can you see my squirrels? ?

I have to say that’s a beautiful fireplace wall FannyCornforth. Very tasteful.

I have an open fire in the sitting room and a wood burner in the dining room. I only use them in deepest winter. The open fire often smokes, depending on the wind and I end up smelling like a kipper. ?

SpringyChicken

FannyCornforth, is that William Morris wallpaper? It would go well with my cushions!

It certainly is Springy! It’s Golden Orchid (it’s a pity my real golden orchid is on its last legs after only a couple of weeks sad).
I love your Seaweed cushions, I nearly bought a duvet cover in that pattern.
I’ve really enjoyed looking at all the different fireplaces.

SueDonim Mon 01-Nov-21 13:51:40

I’ve tried umpteen times to put a photo of my fireplace. Will I succeed this time?

MissAdventure Mon 01-Nov-21 13:09:39

I've only got a huge, ugly radiator in my living room.
I do like a fire, though.
