How long should it take to fix a boiler?

Our boiler failed last Monday. We own our own house so we called the man who usually repairs our boiler. He came the next day and diagnosed two faults. He said he’d be back the next day, or at worst on Thursday to fit the parts and give the boiler a service. He came today, Friday. He fitted the parts and then diagnosed a further part that needs replacing. He left, saying he’ll be back to fit the part on Monday. So that will be one week in December with no hot water and no central heating. The lack of hot water bothers me the most to be honest. We are lucky in that we have a gas fire in the living room, and one of our showers is an electric shower so we can keep clean. We also have a small fan heater which we’ve put upstairs to warm the bedroom. Is a whole week reasonable to wait for the repairs? I consulted Mr Google and apparently if a boiler fails in a rented property the landlord has to get it fixed in 24 hours.

It’s done, mended, repaired, working. This afternoon we have heat. It feels very luxurious. smile

Yes Disco it’s a week and four days since our boiler failed. Fingers crossed for today. I hope your daughter gets her boiler fixed before Christmas.

Out daughter’s boiler failed last Sunday. They’re in a new build, so not sure if it’s the actual boiler...or a fault in the water pressure. Several neighbours have had problems too.

Whatever it is, they have to wait until Monday 20th....so just over a week....to get it looked at. So sounds about right to be honest.

Thanks Blossoming. At least this week it hasn’t been as cold as last week, but I’ll be very happy if it’s finally fixed today.

Had Homeserve for years, but at each renewal date they added something that they no longer covered without additional payment.
The last straw was when they didn’t come out and left us without hot water or central heating for over a week.
The only firm I’ve found that works is Vaillant. Despite the fact that my boiler is not a Vaillant one, they came when they said they would and fixed the problem.

Our flats have a multi-premises contract with British Gas to give us a 24/7 call out and includes an annual service on each of the 25 boilers. We pay many thousands of pounds for this each year, but feel it has been worth it for both peace of mind to all our flat owners and also the safety element.

However, this last twelve months have been a total nightmare. The 'annual' services have all been delayed, cancelled and postponed - often with less than 24 hours notice, many of them two or three or more time. Three which should have been carried out last Autumn and now not being carried out until next year.

One boiler broke down few weeks ago, flat owner told that there is no Engineer available and they should arrange someone locally and then send the cost to BG.

So those of you who think that having Homeserve means you will get quick service may find yourselves very disappointed if you need them.

Audil10 I think you’re right. Out plumber has now said he won’t be back till next Thursday. It seems to be a very elastic piece of string.

We started to have Homeserve over 20 years ago for plumbing and heating. I have keep on having since my husband died and transferred it to my new home 2 years ago. I always have it without the excess. You pay a bit extra. But you get unlimited call outs and all repairs and labour included in the price. Plus boiler serviced every year.

Over the years have saved a fortune in plumbing bills . Quick service and professional engineers . Since I moved here the sewer pipe on my property got a hole. It would have cost me thousands if I had to use a plumber. It was all covered with my policy. Since being here also had my boiler repaired , had a new thermostat fitted and new value on a radiator.

Recommend Homeserve to anyone.

Intermittently going off was the problem with my boiler. The problem was a flap sticking and solved with baby powder.

So in total £450 down. Eventually another large plumbing company came. Replaced parts etc and charged another £250. One week later the original problem returned. They said they cant come back out and to pay £350 to Worcester to get the boiler checked out. (They advertise as specialist in Worcester boilers)
Eventually another plumber came and replaced yet another part and touch wood it's still working.
Shame on the lot of them

Must admit I have a home serve contract with BG, for all electrical, plumbing boiler and drains, yes it costs, but not as much as Happygirl79 has paid out for one or two visits of a so called plumber,that’s terrible, and as a singly gives me peace of mind, and know that boiler is serviced regularly, and anything else is mended within usually a couple of days.

I once had Worcester out to my boiler as it was still under guarantee and the man fixed it the problem with baby powder.

It took a month last winter to get our boiler initially repaired, then when that didn’t work, replaced. It was minus 17deg while we were without heating & hot water. ?

We were without our heating for two weeks recently due to difficulty in sourcing of the spare part required. We’ve had heating back now for two weeks which is wonderful. The house took a couple of days to warm up and be comfortable.

I have been without a working oven since July when my Rayburn was condemned after a gas leak.
The leaks were fixed but though I have bought a new cooker I cannot find anyone to fit it and remove the old one.
I have tried 5 gas engineers / plumbers so far
2 replied to say they are too busy.
I wonder if I am being black listed.
I have no idea what to do. I am just going to wait.
I have an electric ring, hot water and central heating so not as badly off as I could be but what are they busy doing?

We are extremely lucky. Our plumber, a local company, will come and bust a gut to get heating and hot water back to “elderly “ customers the same day. It is a real boon!

I think I would say in reply….how long is a piece of string! Luckily the thermometer is due to rise…..probably about the same time as your heating returns ?

If it isn't a contract/insurance I think you are vulnerable to how busy people are and how available the parts are
I hope it gets sorted Monday

It is not a question or reasonableness. It is a question of time to do the work and the availability of parts. If the parts are out of stock, then there is not a lot he can do about it. Self-employed workmen are as entitled to a home life and rest at the weekend as everyone else.

Obviously not knowing anything about where you live or the make of boiler - and not much even then, I do not know how busy your repair man is or how available the parts he needs are.

If you want 24 hour seamless service you need to use a bigger company for your servicing.
