Electric Ovens

I need to purchase an electric oven. The one that is being replaced has a double oven and now that there are only two of us I find that I only use the upper oven.
Is there a more economical way of replacing just that? It needs to have a grilling facility.
My other question is about built in oven cleaning. Do you feel this is an important feature? I have noticed many of the current ovens say enamel coated. I used to have that and found modern cleaning products exceptionally good. Is there a great advantage in having a self cleaning coating?

Mine is like the one you see in bake-off. Neff. Had it 3 years it is at eye level and it is fine. I wipe it down once a week and it has stayed clean since I’ve had it. It has a grilling option.

I’d certainly go far an eye level oven f I ever had the chance, also our large bottom oven heats up quicker than the top oven and grill as it’s a fan oven it cooks quicker too.
Our self clean coating works when oven is set at its highest temperature, then I only have to clean the door and racks, so to me it’s an important feature.
I would spend some time looking at your various options before buying, some kitchen showrooms might be a good idea as well as the usual Currys/ online stores.

I had a Miele single oven with pyrolytic cleaning. It was very good, when it worked. It was always breaking down unfortunately and once out of guarantee, the call out fee plus parts etc made it too expensive to repair.
We went for a Neff built in hide and slide single oven which was excellent, especially when it needed cleaning as the door tucked out of the way. It also had a grill function.

We replaced it last year with another Neff but this time the double oven version as we struggled with just a single. Sadly it doesn't have the sliding door.
The interior is mainly enamelled or has a special coating so it's easy to clean.

Thank you for the tips. I should have stated that as it is not a kitchen makeover it will have to be slotted into the existing standard space under the worktop.
I really don't need a big oven. Do they do half size ones with perhaps a big drawer for baking tins etc. underneath?
I am currently out of the country so can't pop along to a shop to see them. Just planning what to do on my return.

I will just say that I seem to need a grill at the same time the oven is being used for something else so one oven with a grill option wouldn’t do it for me.

Good point Pamela, it’s just that I haven’t used the big oven in years.

I have a little Zanussi freestanding fan and double oven, ceramic hob, no frills, it’s very reliable and easy to clean
12 yrs old and I’d buy another.

Would it be worth considering alternatives like airfryers, microwaves that can also function as ovens or remoska cookers and managing without a traditional oven. make the space into an extra cupboard.

I hardly use my main oven or grill (the last time was Christmas dinner for 15). I use my combination microwave/grill a lot - as the oven and grill are far better. The air fryer is in daily use, too, as basically, it's a small, fast, fan oven. The instant pot and induction hob are brilliant too.

If/when I move, I don't think I'll bother with a family-sized oven at all.

I shall have a look at a combo microwave/grill. Does it function as an oven too?
I have recently bought a new microwave but I could store an that one as a backup.

I have had no oven, just a combi microwave for the past two and bit years. Just me living here. Love this. Have used it to cook everything, including bread, pastry, cakes, meringues, quiche, etc. etc. As well as using it as a normal microwave.

The only part of it which is not all that good is the grill, so have a compact separate grill.

Am having a very expensive kitchen make-over being done, and have had a full size oven put into this, as kitchens are meant to have that. I have half an eye as to how that new kitchen will help to sell the flat when I die. Except for the grill, do not think I will use that oven very often. Indeed the combi/microwave will go in at eye level and the oven above that!! Will probably use it for some extra storage.

You could buy a combination Microwave. You don't have to have it built in.
They are a conventional oven with option to grill and microwave.
Takes up less room and perfect for one person.

As I have mentioned on other threads, I was fed up with my double oven taking so long (and costly) to heat up then I had the factor in cooking time.

I have not used my double oven since Christmas and have been living and saving money using my ordinary microwave, slow cooker and air fryer. I would not remove the cooker because it would be easier to sell the house with one in situ.

My Neff single oven with grill has been fine for the past 13 years and is really simple to clean (it has the Aquacleanse system which loosens the grime) but I would really like a simple to use combi microwave now. Any recommendations?

I would need it to grill as well as having a fan oven feature.

I’m another one that recommends a Neff oven with a slide away door. Mine is great, heats up quickly and cleans very easily.
