My son has moved house today and I am helping him by setting up his utilities however I have tried and tried to get hold of British Gas to tell them we are new to the property and I cannot get hold of them at all. I go through the automated process it says do you want to join British Gas for your gas and electric so we say yes then they say are you going to move within the next 28 days,we say yes then they say they are sorry they have closed the lines because they have got so much breakdown work to do.I am beyond furious

I would not accept that level of service from any company. Use another.

If British Gas are already supplying the property then they will contact you. Just keep a record of the meter readings. Could you set up an online account?
If their customer service is that bad then I'd leave them as Espee says.

Found it! Get Timestamp on your phone Shinamae and take a picture of the current reading.

My vendor submitted her gas reading and didn't photograph it, it was far more than the reading I had, but luckily I'd photographed it. Nearly cost me £200.

When you’ve got the info and set up from British Gas change supplier. Their service is rubbish. It took them 2 years to sort out their pigs ear with DH’s account. It was a nightmare.

I use Octopus and their customer service is better than any I’ve had to date.

I started with british gas, awful customer service, it took too long to sort out my account at my new build. I went to octopus and never looked back, wonderful service, pleasant and very quick to respond. They came this week to try and get my gas onto smart meter and are pulling out the stops to get me a special part which they have ordered.

Thanks Shandy, when I eventually got through ( on an entirely different number that only came up when I was trying to do it online)..?‍♀️.. I was informed that the house had smart metres so they knew the readings….. apparently. And she did say that she would be sending him monthly bills to begin with so hopefully it will be quite easy to opt out of this quite appalling company.. ?

This is what octopus are saying at the moment..?

I think I've probably got the link for the £50 off because I'm sorted because I fixed earlier in the year? See if they offer you a 'loyalty fix' Shinamae.

Don't just take readings - take a really good photo of the meter. I had a new meter fitted and there's been endless trouble ever since, dealing with complete idiots.

A bill for over a thousand pounds arrived. (They'd actually estimated the initial reading - unbelievable.) I sent my calculations - £127.35 - the mobile phone pics of the old and new ones - and the green card left by the fitter. Eventually, after months - and many, many emails, they took £1100 off the bill, leaving the correct £127.35 I knew I owed.

A lot of gas suppliers are not taking on new customers. If your gas company has gone bust you will be transferred to a power company not necessarily of your choice or to your liking. According to Martin Lewis British Gas are one of the worst especially where refunds are due.they are also incredibly far behind with their breakdown work leaving customers who have paid into their maintenance scheme in the lurch.

We know that British Gas or awful and when I was trying to switch well not switch just get him on as a new customer I could not get through because the automated service First said “do you want your gas and electric with British Gas” we said yes,” have you moved in the last 28 days”we said yes, automated service said “sorry we are behind with our breakdowns and have closed these lines”!!! totally annoying. As soon as we can we will get away from British Gas I would like him with octopus but can’t do it at the moment
