Under my sink….

I have a theory that the more you dislike (and avoid) a particular task, the more products you have to deal with it.

OK so what should I make of 2 unopened bags of dishwasher tabs, 2 bottles of drain cleaner, 2 bottles of Viakal lime scale remover, plus one Cilit Bang, 3 glass/window cleaning products, more multisurface cleaners you can shake a stick at and enough silver Polish to see me out. Not to mention the other products you can see.
Plus, whatever possessed me to think it would be a good idea to tidy out the cupboard under the sink?
What tasks do you hate? Do you like me, buy the product to “compensate” ?
Please reassure me I am not alone in this?

I too have everything but the kitchen sink under my KITCHEN sink, but having read that vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and a lemon do all these various cleaning jobs I can’t bring myself to throw them out. Basically everything just needs an e cloth and elbow grease.

My large sink is on an angle, so my cupboard is octagon shaped, with lots of room, but not easy to access the back.
We keep the garbage bin, cleaners and bin liners, plant food and watering can, and a bag for recycled plastic.

It gets a wipe down fairly often (because of the garbage bin), and a more serious clean out a few times a year.

Mine is like that, too. I have installed little shelves to raise the bottles at the back and everything else is in a plastic crate. We used to have a tap that would leak occasionally so we have a water alarm down there which has proved very useful.

Rubbish bins are kept right at the other end of the kitchen (built in). I was fed up with people fiddling around my knees to get at the bin while I was at the sink. Also the bin is nearer the door that way, so quicker to empty it.

As bijou says, most specialist cleaning products are superfluous and under my sink many are not being replaced as they run out, instead I fill up any empty spray bottles with home made solutions.

Glad most of you are the same as me, I am trying to work my way through everything but I am moving away from using harsh chemicals and back to natural cleaning products so it might take a while!

same. I am going back to bio D products, had to store them in the garage for now. I am trying to clean as much as possible, some products take forever to use up

Love this thread, it’s made me realise my cupboard is Full of stuff I never use (hate cleaning!) and my dishwasher tabs have to be stored under the kitchen table as a result!

Under my sink:
a roll recycling bin sacks, a roll of bin sacks,
box of dishwashing tablets,
box of dishwashing salt,
bottle of dishwashing liquid,
spray bottle of vinegar,
some hand towels and some drying up cloths.

Lots of shoe polishes for shoes we no longer have, some belonging to people who no longer live here - I don't enjoy polishing shoes at all!

Cupboards are 600ml - both of them in the pic. So 1200ml width in total. I think that is fairly standard for a cupboard?

Bijou Wed 23-Mar-22 21:15:04

All these cleaning products are not necessary. Soda crystals , white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, fairy liquid and bleach will cope with practically all cleaning jobs.

There's just not enough room in here but the tank for my boiling water tap takes up a fair bit of space. I have a tiny utility room so there's even more stuff under the sink in there.

Wow! What a fascinating thread!

DH does our shopping and , oh , how he loves a " BOGOF " offer. As a result I have a lot of duplicate bottles under the sink .
He's soooo gullible ! Bless him !

Maw, I will gladly take the excess silver polish off your hands. I cannot get it anywhere and the family silver is in dire need of a polish! ?

I planned the new kitchen so the undersink cupboard held the indoor cats litter tray. It had an air brick for ventilation and a plugin deodoriser , so they now have their privacy too . I have limited space for cleaning equipment elsewhere. Best thing I did

My son visiting from Oz to look after me….I can’t say he’s a cook. ! But he can’t half clean a kitchen AND he sorted my under sink cupboard ! But I got a telling off for the number of random cleaning cloths I possessed.

I love having tidy cupboards and drawers and lockdown gave me the time too.
Always have to throw out stuff but the satisfaction is up there with taking the fluff out of the tumble drier filter ? Just realised I need to get a life haha

LadyGracie Wed 23-Mar-22 16:28:53

I emptied mine last week to tidy it and sort stuff out to throw away, it all went back and looks no different than when I started. It’ll all come in useful one day grin

When my mother in law went into a nursing home and we had to clear her house, I found my deceased father in law's false teeth.
Can't remember what other gems there were as the teeth have wiped all else from my memory!

I had to move from my house to a ground floor flat , much smaller of course. So in the move I found how many washing up bottles and dettol bottles etc. Well I have been here over 6 months now and have not bought a single cleaning thing and am slowly using up these bottles and cleaning stuff and intend to end up with one plus a spare. But in my defence I used to live at the top of a hill where we would get snowed up in the winter and needed to have enough food and everything else to last for a week at least. With all the bills going up right now , it is a bit of help to have these spare cleaning things. Now I am a widow and living alone of course when I leave the bathroom clean and tidy it stays like it!! Such a pleasure after having a family using the bathroom and sometimes things left in other p laces or not to be found at all or more annoying than most things the culprit who uses the last of the toilet paper and does not put the new one on !! As I am the sole occupant it is good to know that this will not be happening any time soon!!

I am sitting wondering just how large your under-sink kitchen cupboards are, ladies.

Mine is a standard Ikea lower cupboard. I keep the washing-up bowl and a bottle of washing-up liquid in it. The cats' drinking bowl that is hopefully waiting for the new cats, along with the basin used to drown their fleas in and the fine tooth comb. All this along with filters for the coffee-maker in the one half of the cupboard,

The other side of the cupboard houses tin of scouring powder, two different types of oven cleaner, a packet of pot scourers, a tub of brown soap for washing floors in and a container of sal amoniac for cleaning paintwork and two very small plastic bowls for assorted cleaning purposes.

How do the rest of you manage to fit all the products you describe into yours? I literally cannot get more into mine.

I only buy one bottle or pot of any cleaning product at a time and replace it at need. Perhaps because I enjoy housework, I always know what is in that cupboard.

Dunno Tizliz but it's a shame isn't it?

Why do people have to spoil a light hearted thread?

Mummer Wed 23-Mar-22 14:21:18

What IS "passive aggressive" anyway?
I'd think you're either aggressive or not? Anything else is sarcastic / snide/ untrue.
Some folks have never EVER been in the company of a truly aggressive type otherwise they wouldn't use the term inappropriately. Or is it modern claptrap?
