Cleaning The (New) Loo.

Bleach and a loo brush every day. Also Spirits of Salts once a month to totally destroy limescale at the bottom of the bowl and around the bend, works like magic.

I have just bought a silicon toilet brush after reading about them on this site.

It does feel more hygienic than the old bristle one.

Like Perseverance above, we also have a funny shaped toilet bowl, with a very small area where the water is and steep sides. We have the same problem. I wonder if the designers actually test out the toilets!!

I am guilty of using bleach down the loo as it is cheaper than the fancy loo cleaners. I clean the loo then put more bleach in and leave the toilet brush in the bleachy water for about half an hour.

I have one toilet that I put a bleach block (not blue) in the cistern. My other loo has a button on the top and I can't lift the cistern lid off to put the block in.

I did buy some Harpic toilet cleaner, in a bid to get away from the neat bleach. I didn't realise when I bought it that it was pink. It stained the toilet bowl for quite a while.

Toilet brushes ???

I've been a householder for 50 years. I have always had toilet brushes. Everyone who has lived in my house during that time is still alive and disgustingly healthy.*

And I'm not going to tell you how I clean my toilets

(*apart, of course, from the relatives from a generation before ours)

Citric acid crystals are excellent for dissolving hard water stains, brilliant in the kettle too.
We had a new loo put in a couple of years ago and It must be a funny shape because I find it almost impossible to use without leaving a mark! I found I was getting through bottles of bleach like mad. Then I discovered that if I poured water from a jug over the offending mark, straight away mind, it disappeared and I could go back to my usual bi-weekly cleaning routine.

I put a squirt of washing up liquid around the bowl after each flush.
It creates a barrier which collects debris and makes it easy to flush away.
A tablet in the bowl once a fortnight to help with limescale.
Actually we've just had a new bathroom make over and I didnt think of changing my cleaning routine, but maybe I have to rethink.

I have a Toilet Duck brush which uses paper pads impregnated with cleaner which are then flushed down the toilet. The handle is stored in a special plastic holder, no nasty dirty bristles in the bathroom!

I use Parazone in the pan it’s the only thing that gets rid of the lime scale, clean the rest with flash wipes. No toilet brushes.

We live in a hard water area, no matter what I do I get a build up of lime around the edge of the loo seat as well as the lip of the loo where the water washes down at the waters edge and at the bottom of the loo as well. The only thing that works is lime scale remover and at times a scourer and cream bath cleaner.

All my loo brushes stand in ceramic pots and I put bleach and water in that for them to stand in and change it regularly.

Harpic limescale remover is very effective, but be careful. I left the bottle on the closed lid of the loo to warn DH of the chemicals within. When I came back drips of Harpic had etched into the plastic lid!

Washing up liquid each day. Rubber gloves and designated face cloths - washed regularly! Hate toilet brushes, very unhealthy IMO!! I do occasionally add a squirt of bleach.

I should avoid harsh chemicals as they may in time damage the surface of the new ceramicware. Not to mention the environment. I recently read that washing up liquid is perfectly adequate for keeping the loo clean. Use a brush if you like, but train the rest of the household to put down loo paper before doing a no. 2 to reduce splashes and catch skid marks.

I wipe down once a day and squirt a fairly thick solution of washing up liquid into the bowl which I have decanted into a small spray bottle. Some may find this OTT but I prefer to get into a daily routine rather than irregularly cleaning and losing track of when you last cleaned.

Those silicone brushes are recommended by so many people. I can't see how they work, but they certainly seem more hygienic.

Bleach is not good for a loo. It wears surface away thus leaving a roughness that dirt and limescale can get a foothold on.
Our loo was installed in November. I use a silicon loo brush that is easy to keep clean and hygienic and a weekly squirt of Harpic limescale remover.
We also have a spray bottle of freshener called Pooper Star to spray into the bowl after flushing which keeps everything smelling nice. I use flash wipes or loo roll to wipe the seat and lid when necessary.

I can't be much help here. I have two coloured toilets and I dislike them both. The only way I can manage to keep them clean is with Cif, a toilet brush and then a squirt of bleach.
I really wish we had changed them when we first moved here.
