I am wondering if external shutters help against heat loss. If you have them or know someone who does, have they helped?

In France it is normal to use them against the cold and in summer protection from the heat. The only problem I can see is that in the UK the windows open outwards. I really recommend either shutters or blinds for insulation both in winter and summer, they do make a big difference. I also have lined curtains.

They do make a difference as mokryna said as we have windows opening inwards. On the downside they do make the house feel gloomy and a it's a bit claustrophobic.

Relatives in Canada have them - along with internal window quilts. It gets so cold that the glass can crack without them.

If you can manage to close them at night (and perhaps in unused rooms) they make a huge difference in heat retention. So, inward-opening windows, ground floor (if you don't mind going out) or automatic only, I'd assume.

Some neighbours here have had insulated roller shutters installed on their first floor bedroom windows. With the expected rise in heating costs, I'm considering triple glazing in our coldest room - the one above the garage.

I only keep them close during the day, in the rooms I am not in.

This suddenly woke up smile. Thank you all. I have a sliding patio door. This is the one place that is drafty. I have thermal lined curtains and an extra thermal lining but thought shutters might help and be extra security.

Too true *DaisyAnne and you could ask for an insurance reduction.

Mmm. I didn't think of that smile Thank you.

Mokrina and Sodapop - I agree .
The inward opening windows were one of the things I liked about french houses.
Also the way the hinges worked when hanging a door.
Once, when closing the outside shutters at the end of summer, I found behind them strange creatures which looked like leather gloves. I had woken up some bats!

Oh yes, I had never given that a second thought until you mentioned it. However, they are heavy to lift up and oil to stop a rare squeak.

Another extra DaisAnne, maybe you can claim in a tax rebate as it is new insulation.
