Current house buying trend - bath or shower?

Just that, really. Do today's housebuyers prefer a bath or a large shower in their property.

...had... 'only a shower but with'... a big enough footprint....

missingmarietta Tue 12-Jul-22 15:28:43

Both. I've never had a house with just a shower in it and I've moved a lot. I've experienced only one amazing shower when I went on holiday once, others have not been impressive.

If a place I wanted had a big enough footprint I would get a bath with shower over installed.

I have both but when my GC were small I used the small plastic bath left over from when my DC were babies.

Thank you for your comments. I have a shower over my bath but can no longer get in and out of the bath, so cannot use either.

I have little savings, so when I die the only thing I will be able to leave my girls is the house which they will need to sell quickly to cover costs.

I was afraid if I converted the bathroom into a shower room it would compromise the house's sellability. But maybe not.

Thank you again for all your comments.

We don't have a bath and don't miss it. We love our walk in shower and glass screen. It's such a different experience from showering in a cubicle with closing door.
I'd have thought that rising fuel costs and large volume of water required for baths would make showers more popular.

We have two showers and the main bathroom only had a shower when we moved in and room for a bath. As I have a small GD we put in a small bath. Doesn’t feel cramped at all. I prefer to have both so you can choose.

No room for bath and walk-in shower in our house. One or the other, but not both, although we do have a small quadrant step-in shower in one corner. The bathroom measures about 8 foot square and used to be a bedroom. Bath and loo one side, wash basin and small shower the other.

Our house was built many centuries before bathrooms.

Most of you must live in big houses we had to take bath out to have room for walk in shower ,we don't have ensuite or downstairs toilet etc .

Redhead56 Sun 10-Jul-22 18:05:44

I would like our bathroom turned into a walk in wash room but it's the first thing people criticise apparently. People looking for a family house want a bath room well they do here anyway.

Both. I prefer a bath, my husband prefers a shower.

Athrawes Sun 10-Jul-22 16:25:02

Both for me - and separate. I can't use a bath now so have a separate shower but my family still enjoy a bath when they come

Kim19 Sun 10-Jul-22 14:55:26

Bath for me as I have plenty of space. Can't think how many years since I used it personally but family and guests sometimes do so. I have indulged in a bath whilst staying in hotels but don't remember particularly enjoying it. Perhaps the 'novelty'? Who knows? I'm a bit daft like that!

ShazzaKanazza Sun 10-Jul-22 14:49:11

We have both. A bath is in our en suite with a shower over. We have a walk in shower in the main bathroom. Most guests prefer to shower which is good but DH and I like our bath. We only shower at the gym or in a hotel if there is no bath.

M0nica Sun 10-Jul-22 14:35:21

If house hunting, as long as there was room for a bath, what was actually fitted wouldn't bother me as a replacement could quickly be fitted.

I am currently restricted to showers, following minor surgery and IHATE them. I cannot wait to be able to have a bath again. For me showers are for swimming pools.

If it’s a family house where there are likely to be young children, then a bath is usually wanted. But even adults who usually shower do sometimes like a bath, too.

We have what’s to me the best of both worlds - 2 baths with good showers over. You can shower off after your bath!
Baths mainly used for visiting Gdcs nowadays, but I still wouldn’t be without at least one.

When dd1 was still at home, she’d often have a shower in the morning, and a bath before bed. Just as well we didn’t have a water meter then!

I can’t remember the last time I had a bath I always shower. I have a shower over the bath because my son still prefers a bath at least once a week but I would not get rid of the bath whatever..

TerriBull Sat 09-Jul-22 19:07:50

Absolutely down to personal preference, which as this thread displays pretty split We have both but I would choose a walk in shower over a bath always.

I only ever have a shower when there is no alternative such as when on holiday. I was shortsighted for most of my life and couldn’t see well without my glasses. Thank goodness I see much better nowadays but still feel very uncomfortable in a shower. If it doesn’t have a flexible hose but only an overhead fitting then I won’t use it at all. I know I’m not getting any younger but hope that I’ll be able to continue using a bath.

Both, we wouldn’t buy a house that didn’t have both in,

AreWeThereYet Sat 09-Jul-22 18:06:06

Both. Shower in the ensuite but bath with shower over in the family bathroom, which I use when my muscles are a bit achy. Estate agent told us not to get rid of the bath when I was thinking of changing it into a walk in shower as it's a house that is likely to be bought by a family.

My neighbour had her bath removed and just has a shower because of her husbands mobility problems but she says she really misses having a bath. I know I would too. I can’t reach down to clean my feet in the shower for one thing. And the grandchildren love having a bath and playing with their boats. What I don’t understand is this fashion for having baths in bedrooms.

giulia Sat 09-Jul-22 17:33:10

In the country where I live, baths are not popular. My daughter's flat has two bathrooms, both with shower only.

Whenever my grandchildren come to me, the first thing they say is "Can I have a bath, please!"

Floradora9 Sat 09-Jul-22 15:56:18

We have an ensuite shower plus a family bathroom with a shower attached to it . When having my house valued with selling in mind we asked the agent if it would be a bad idea to remove the bath and she said as it was a bungalow which would attract older buyers it would be fine . A family want a bath. I always proudly say that nobody has a bath in our house .

MrsKen33 Sat 09-Jul-22 15:44:18

Both.We have two shower rooms and one bathroom with bath and shower. However we very rarely use the bath, but shower every day.

GagaJo Sat 09-Jul-22 15:09:30

Both ideally. I've lived without a bath and am now living without a shower (ongoing issues with leakage in the bathroom).

If I can only have one, I'd rather have a bath. I miss a shower but not hugely. Whereas when I've only had a shower, I really having a bath.
