Thinking of getting a garden awning. Needs to be about 4m wide to cover french doors and a window.
Has anyone ever had one installed? I need a rough idea of price and also want to know how to clean. I can imagine this might be fairly expensive so want to get it right. The purpose is to block the sun and neighbours as much as possible. Any advice would be most welcome.

Wouldn’t be without ours - three across the back of the house - cost about £6000 the years ago, local firm. An expensive necessity here.

We had one installed 22years ago when we moved in. We face south and it is invaluable. Ours is about 12 metres wide and 6 metres deep. It is German and needs no maintenance. In 22 years all we have replaced is the control switch inside.
It cost us £4000 and seemed a lot at the time but so pleased with it.

Thank you. Seems like a good idea but what a price!

Do you mean a retractable fabric awning? I had one installed four years ago but it was a bit of a waste of money as due to the angle of my patio in a south ish facing garden, I only get a narrow shaded area until late afternoon. The sun comes onto the patio under the awning if that makes sense!

Mine has a remote control to retract it and it fits into a upvc cylinder when retracted which keeps the fabric clean. But the wind sensor, designed to retract automatically if there is a sudden gust of wind, is faulty and sometimes it retracts for no reason. I cannot find any company willing to fix the repair or to convert mine to a manual opening awning - rather annoying!

At my old house we had a lovely verandah across the back which acted as an awning to keep the sun off the patio but this bungalow does not have enough space. I have looked at free standing shelters with a glass roof which can have shades and sides fitted but almost fainted at the £12,000 estimate!

I rented a French cottage once that had a large but simple one attached by ropes to the house and trees. It was very effective in keeping off the heat.

We have one covering our patio door and kitchen at the south facing back of the house. it extends to 3m and it means we can use our kitchen diner in the summer , it has been out all day every day in this hot spell. Ours was made in Germany , we bought it from a firm called Aquarius blinds. I think it cost about 4k, Definitely worth it.
