Has anyone dared to turn their heating on yet?

It's feeling a lot chillier tonight and the temperature is reading 17.5C in the flat and 16C in the annexe. Normally I would have put my heating on but I'm holding out! I might succumb at 17C and set the heating for 18C. I'm trying to be brave.

Have you switched your heating on yet? Are you holding out a bit longer? What will you set the thermostat for this year?

Having turned off the heating in the bedrooms that aren’t used I’ve realised I have mould growing in the windows so that was a false economy!

why Rapchika post on an old thread about heating on or off

We tend to focus on keeping our house warm as the cold on old bones brings us to a grinding halt. We will sacrifice many luxuries to keep our heating on when it is cold.

I had a call from my daughter last night ,her eldest daughterw as giggling in the background. She's had a msg form her sister ...in another room ..saying Make your life savings available to put in Dads account, mum just turned on the heating, followed by "Dad" msging HEATING!! its still September.
Dad has been in Scotland for 12 years now but his southern approach to heating seems to still be with him .Heating has always gone on when its cold ,not by the calendar.lol

First thing I did on coming downstairs this morning was check the smart meter to see what the base line price per day had changed to. It is showing exactly the same standing charges and rates per KwH as yesterday. Dare I hope?

It’s hard to describe, it’s just a guy I’ve been using for a few years, who just brings a trailer load.
Last year it was £320.
So this week alone, I’ve spent £900 on oil, and £400 on logs.

A trailer load makes sense. I just wondered whether you were paying that for something like a trailer load or a smaller quantity.

dawntreader1 I have said it before and I will say it again I just put the gas fire on in the lounge in the afternoon you may be using more gas that way than you would if you put the CH on.

We are currently in France, in Normandy, where we heat the house with electric wall heaters and a wood-burning stove in the living room. However we have just replaced our wood burner wood burner, which rotted away in the 18 months we couldn't get over here during COVID.

The new wood-burner meets all current rules for emissions and efficiency, andwe used it yesterday for the very first time. Last night I tamped the draft down and put some big pieces of wood on it before going to bed and when I came downstairs this morning some 10 hours later, it was still smouldering so I put some kindling o nit, upped the draft and it is now merrily burning away, so, with a bit of luck the 24/7 heat from the stove will be ssufficient to keep the house warm for the next week.

Our wood is almost free. We had two very large poplar trees come down last winter, which DH paid our neighbour to cut and stack in the barn for us and we now have enough wood to last us many years.

He’s a farmer, he just chucks it in his trailer, I’m not sure he’d know!
I want to support him, but shall be shopping around for the next load.

Rather than heat the whole house I just put the gas fire on in the lounge in the afternoon but then I am just getting over Covid. I will use the central heating once it gets a little colder.

I am determined to hold out until tomorrow (October).

Ailsa43 Fri 30-Sept-22 21:51:14

yes tonight I put the heating on because it got really very chilly in the house , with the wind and heavy rain going on outside.. turned it off after 2 hours, not because it was very warm.. altho' it was comfortable, but for fear of the bill

I put the heating on today at 4 pm as the whole house was cold. I'd been wearing double jumpers all day plus thick socks and trousers. However my oh was furious said I could sit under electric throw and turned it off at 5.30. Ive been sat in kitchen since which is the warmest room. He says he doesn't feel cold however the real reason is he doesn't want me to use the oil before winter sets in. Any suggestions to make him see sense before I murder him angry.

We paid 65€ for a cubic metre of wood this year. Getting a sweep (required annually for the insurance) is proving much more difficult!
We have just put the underfloor heating on so it is very cosy.

Oldnproud Fri 30-Sept-22 18:56:36

Ds hought some wood a couple of weeks ago. If I remember rightly, it was well over £100 for a cubic meter, and he shopped around.

M0nica Fri 30-Sept-22 18:44:35

In France wood is sold by a known quantity, a cubic metre or a stere.

Ask your wood supplier for the price per metre cubed.

We visited an elderly relative today. He is 91 and his heating is set to 21C. It was lovely.

I’ve told O.H. that if he doesn’t put the heating on I’m moving in with his uncle.

That’s the trouble with logs, you don’t really know what you’re getting, he called it a full load, but that could mean anything, I’ll be shopping around for the next lot.

Round here, you can get various sizes of log deliveries - from small bags to those big bags builders get sand etc delivered in and then right up to a van or lorry load. I just wondered what kind of quantity you got for £400.

Madgran77 Fri 30-Sept-22 17:44:55

Haven't switched it on yet. I have invested in thermal leggings and long-sleeved tops - to go under winter wear. Planning to layer up a lot as well!

Makes me laugh when I think about my arguments with my mum about her "sacrilegious" suggestion (to a 14-year-old) that if I was cold, I might wear a vest!!! grin

Mr. B finally succumbed and put the heating on for an hour early morning, so I got up to a nice warm house.

I have turned off all the radiators I think we can do without, but am lighting a fire every night, that’s not actually a cheap alternative as the last load of logs I had last weekend, was £400 quite a rise on last year.

How much is that for? That seems very expensive. We've got around five years' supply of logs in our garden at the moment, all of which were free, but my daughter's just had logs delivered and I'm sure they were nowhere near as expensive as that.
