Gas meter

Don’t know if this will help but my daughter’s gas meter is in a cupboard in her kitchen.

My gas meter is in the cupboard under the stairs. Always has been and have lived here for nearly forty years.

We had our gas meter in the living room in our two up two down terraced house. It was in a built in cupboard. This was a good few years ago now.

Does it need to be moved? Is there some way of boxing the meter in? Aesthetically, it’s the same. Your garage is going to be a useable room, so it’s not going to make any difference, if you know what I mean. Good luck !

Mine is in a utility room which was once the back of the garage and sited next to the electricity meter which would fail these requirements. When gas pipes in the road were replaced about ten years ago and all our meters checked nobody mentioned that the configuration didn't meet regulation. There are other things in the room that would fail these criteria: windows, electrical points, tumble dryer. The meters are enclosed in a cabinet which affords protection.

If you go on legislation.gov.uk and type in The Gas Safety (Installations and Use) Regulations 1998 hopefully it will tell you all the rules. I also went on a contractor site called GEC who had simplified guidelines on their website. I know in some terraced houses the meters are boxed in cabinets in a room but of course the gas meter mustn't be right near electrics where a spark could ignite. British Gas are like a secret society trying to get sense from them is nigh on impossible.

My meters are in a built in unit under the stairs but the stairs are in the living room so yes mine is actually in the living room and the gas board fitted a new meter 2 yrs ago so it must be ok.

My daughter's is the same and too expensive to bother moving it.

You can have a meter wherever you like. The meter in the first house we bought, a new build, in 1969 had both meters in a cupboard outside the front door. Some people have meters in meter boxes outside.

We needed to move our electricity a few years ago and it was moved to a cupboard built into the kitchen wall outside.

The usual limitation is where your gas or electricity supply comes into the house. Our gas meter is under the stairs and we know that the gas pipe runs under our front path, which means that we could have the meter just outside the front door, but could not have it beside the electricity meter out the back as the main gas pipe doesnt run that faar.

To change your meter you need to contact your energy supplier. If that is British Gas, contact Brtish Gas, but if you are a customer of octopus, or EDF, or SSE, or any other supplier, you must contact them. Our meter was moved by SSE as they were our energy supplier at the time.

No it doesn’t need to be moved. Is quite high up and can be boxed in. Just wondered if regulations meant I couldn’t do this. Looks like I’m ok to box it in. Thanks

Our meters are outside in a lockable cabinet just outside the kitchen.
