De-cluttering, the never-ending process

De-cluttering can be emotionally and physically draining. We, when we were two, started the process from the family home and that was in 2006. The big de-clutter

Since then we moved house twice and had two more de-clutters

Then we became just I and I moved again to a new build with much less storage but I got storage made and I developed room for stash

Now at 75, I am on another mission, to remove what I don`t need or will not need. Last remove was from my garden just two days ago, tall planters, short planters and the contents

That bit of help, advice and encouragement is all we need. We know what to do but it is, or can be, psychologically difficult. Slow and steady is key

Not exactly a decluttering programme but I’ve just discovered Clean it, fix it on BBC and am binge watching the whole series. So many tips on organising the home and quite reassuring to see other people with homes like mine. It’s the sort of programme that gears me up into tackling jobs. Mind you it’s yet another programme where I don’t believe they do the work in 24 hours. The programme I’m watching at the moment features someone who, like me, struggles to throw things away because they just go into landfill. And, 20+ years after he left my ex is going to clear his stuff from out of the garage grin

I have a new method. Everyday I am dumping, recycling, donating or giving away ONE thing from the garage or inside the house. So far so good and it feels quite refreshing. Little things please little minds!!

Still plodding on here. Somehow life - and sunshine - seems to get in the way of focusing. A couple of supermarket sized bags, one of clothes the other of ‘stuff’, went to a charity shop this week so definitely not given up. I’ve not seen that programme maybee, will have a look, could inspire me.

Sometimes the sheer enormity of how much I have to do overpowers me. But I’m the opposite: warm weather and I find an energy that I don’t have in winter. I was actually getting a bit worried about my health because I was so tired and achey but after a week or so of warm weather I feel like a new person.

Oh I like the sunshine maybee. That’s the problem, I’m outside all the time not giving a thought to what’s lurking indoors grin.

It’s outside work I’m having to do at the moment so it’s working out quite well! Mind you it’s supposed to be raining in a day or so.

Cardboard and glass went to the dump today!

wink 5 new items of clothing in, all at half price and items I wear for winter. The older ones are getting tatty and will be removed. I suppose I should call this maintenance and not de-cluttering, unless I can remove 6 or more items in which case slow mo de-cluttering continues

Hurrah! Someone on Freegle has just asked for a wicker hamper and I have one. Another bit of decluttering. I hope they come to collect it!

No-one is having my wicker hampers 😲

Just saying .....

Well done.

They have dolls in one at the moment; really I should get rid of the dollies but no-one wants them. Then I could fill it with yarn 😀

Another one has spare bedding in it in the appropriate bedroom.

Another one has yarn in it - you get the gist 😁

Creative use of hampers. Good for you !grin

Tiny Tears anyone?

I haven’t exactly got rid of anything but I am cleaning the kitchen and have got through quite a lot of my pandemic stockpile! I used to buy large bags of kibble for my dog but, after reading that it needed using up quite quickly after opening, even if decanted into air proof containers, I’ve started buying smaller bags even though they’re less cost effective as she only has a small amount for supper. This has freed up a lot of space in my larder. I am putting a lot of dried soup mix into the brown bin tonight. Another pandemic stockpile food that I didn’t really enjoy eating! ( the peas always seemed to remain hard!). I’ve still got lots of lentils to use up. I do enjoy having a massive clean and reorganise. The only problem is I’ve been doing it for years and my house still isn’t either clean or organised! And I often put things away in a new place and forget I’ve even got them.

After another decluttering session , feeling rather smug, it is oh so tempting to browse the charity shops for a well earned treat. If I can stay away my pocket will thank me too as I'm trying to declutter my spending too. There always seems to be a perfect little jug giving me the come hither!

Yes. Charity shops are my nemesis, too…they bring out my inner magpie or Gollum. I see treasure everywhere….

Oh, me too, MayBee70. My latest haul includes a pretty china dish (I’ve already got loads), a necklace and two dresses for my next cruise.

I had the cheek to start a thread a few months back, exhorting people to join me in a decluttering challenge.

Did it work for me? Obviously not blush.

I can't believe the number of leads and connections we have. Lots of them obsolete. Off to the BHF......

MayBee70 Tue 20-Jun-23 19:12:26

My local repair cafe takes in old wiring and stuff for recycling. Unfortunately, since I started decluttering I’ve spent a fortune on things to help me organise my life sad

I call it my DH's electrical department!

This slow and steady of mine is working albeit at a tortoise pace. I am using and not replacing when I can and just this morning have happily empted two 9 litre really useful boxes into one.

I have not given much away to cs this month and have been visiting and coming out with a book or two. The garden has kept me occupied and perhaps de-cluttering is, for me, more of a bad-weather job.

Keep up the good work and don`t worry about the mo-jo if it seems to have vanished, it will come back

MayBee70 Wed 21-Jun-23 12:38:12

Every winter I think that, as I’m not working on the garden I can concentrate on the house. However, come the spring I find myself working in the garden and still haven’t sorted the house out. I also keep wondering what I did throughout the pandemic, given that, being uber careful I wasn’t going anywhere. Recently I cleaned a lean to that I have at the side of the house ( my ex built it to house my sons bikes) and what used to be a pen for our house cats but is now a covered area for my rain hating whippet. I don’t understand why I can spend a day washing flower pots ( I’m a bit ocd about some things) when the inside of my house looks like a war zone!

karmalady Wed 21-Jun-23 15:14:05

I think Maybee because it is zoned in your garden and when the pots are done then that zone is done. Houses are constantly occupied and there are many corners and areas which makes it much harder. When I get aimless then I just do a drawer or a cupboard, even if only to tidy and sort. Aiming for the whole is just too much
