Conservatories- Naff?

Just heard on the radio that having a conservatory is now the height of ‘naffness’, and can knock £15000 off the value of your property.

Oh dear! Well, if we ever put our house up for sale, the conservatory will have to be designated either ‘the sun room’ or ‘the garden room’.

A rose by any other name….

I think they are lovely but have had reservations regarding the painting of the back of the house. It would involve scaffolding and not the ladder which dh has used for years.

Surely our houses are our homes, to suit us and our lifestyle while we live in them.
Not assets only to have them styled with a view to what they will sell for in the future.
I love my conservatory, it is my main room from April onwards and always used at Christmas.
My friend could not use a bath so had a full width shower put in its place instead of listening to dire warnings that a bath was a selling point in a family sized house.
Should she live the next years being uncomfortable so that her family can inherit more?

Our conservatory looks directly on to my veg patch and lovely colourful garden I can sit and plan where my plugs and seeds go etc as I look at it. It brings light into a rather dark living room because of the position it’s in.
It adds value to the property its an additional place to sit. I am certain our children won’t sniff at the money they will inherit when it’s sold.

Not just the radio Nanadana all the papers and elsewhere. I think the survey emanates from an estate agent.

I think, also, the real problem is all those cheap plastic, fake period style conservatories that many people added nto their houses, often tiny houses in tiny gardens , making the garden smaller still.

I suspect that a well-built, fully insulated conservatory that is integral to the house, rather than just an add-on, because it useable all year round will hold its value.

Mind you conservatories have been around for a few centuries, so I guess they’ve never really been out of fashion.

At one time everyone was knocking through their living rooms and dining rooms to make one large room. Now they are converting them back

I was pleased to read this, and will tell my DH, as he would like to do this. I refuse, as I like having my rooms separate. I knew if I held out fashions would change again.

I love the idea of one, but have never actually been in one. I don't know of a single house here that has one. Perhaps because of our extreme temperatures they are just not done here.

But they do look beautiful in magazines.

I didn't know conservatories went in and out of fashion.

all the rage?
When was that?

Louella12 Thu 20-Apr-23 21:59:49

I never wanted one when they were all the rage.

It's funny how fashion and trends come and go. At one time everyone was knocking through their living rooms and dining rooms to make one large room. Now they are converting them back.

Same with picture rails and stair spindles. Cover them up back in the 50s or 60s. Our son's house had the most beautiful staircase spindles which had been encased in MDF or whatever it was. Also a fabulous parquet floor covered in lino.

My friend spent thousands of pounds on a Conservatory - hardly used it. That money would have been better spent on a a bedroom or living room

Does she not have a bedroom or living room? 🤔

They said a dated conservatory would loose you this amount of money not a well kept one. I have one now and had one in my last house . We bought this house because it had room to build one . We live in ours in the summer and even to-day spent the day in it . It is unheated but warms up the rest of the house when it is sunny. No better place for an afternoon nap .

The Orangery at Dalkeith Palace

Now, because that's just down the road from me, that's automatically what I think of whenever some says 'orangery'! I love Dalkeith Country Park.

An orangerie!! How very pretentious.
This thread is getting quite heated. Perhaps we should open the skylights?
We moved into a bungalow when our DC were small and it was the best place to live with young children. So easy being on one floor.
Now I live above my workshop and the attic playroom is where the DGC end up.

There's a beautiful orangerie at Dalkeith Palace.

What is the difference between a Orangery and conservatory?
It's personnel choice but I don't like conservatories.

An orange tree.

Tens of thousands of pounds.

It's Hyacinth Bucket thing

Ive thought of adding a small conservatory so I can do my photography there but I could always call it my "studio" just as my spare bedroom full of stock is "mt warehouse."

I dont give a dogs damn for other people's opinions of what is smart of naff.

Me neither.

I shall call it my garden room, craft room, sunroom, lemonery, - or just common or garden conservatory 😁

If anyone wants to buy our house I am not reducing the price because it has a conservatory.
If they don't like it they can buy another house/alter it/take it down.

sodapop Thu 20-Apr-23 16:10:54

Not for me either, I dislike conservatories, probably because I don't like strong sunlight and heat. Nothing do with naffness or otherwise.
My ideal home would have instead a large boot/utility room with a shower and space for all the animal paraphernalia.
