As I said, horses for courses. I have nowhere to fix two ends of a line, but I do have a tucked away outside utility area close to the utility room and out of sight of the rest of the garden in which to fit a whirligig line.

Indeed. What's tolerable, to each person, in their garden.

As explained: retractable line has hook which attaches to ring fixed into an exterior wall. Easy, the hook retract, tiny ring stays.

No choice when it’s a communal space.
I may ask for a couple of washing lines instead (they’ll probably think I’m mad)
but our rotary ones look grubby and hard to wipe down.

I have now bought a replacement line off Amazon and will put it up shortly. Thanks all

Our retractable line has a hook which attaches to a ring fixed into an exterior wall. Quite easy to pull the line if I ever want to hang drying out. Not a waste to our garden space, dirty, or ugly imo.

I am cack handed and have never had a problem restringing a whirligig line.

Norah Doesn't a retractable washing line need somewhere to hook the end of it onto to when it is in use, or is it self supporting?

I think which drying system best suits anyone is dependant on, their circumstances. We have a long thin house (width wise) and at one end there is a utility room and utility outside space with the whirligig dryer, bins and side gate. My whirligig is completely out of the way, and virtually out of sight of other garden uses, and stays up permanently, and any cleaning it needs it gets from the rain.

A retractable line is less messy (and far less ugly) stays clean. Perhaps that's a thought when it's line replacement time.

My middle son isn’t ‘handy’ , but he decided to restring their rotary line , well such a tangle ! It did for a while , but mixed lines , some crossed , some slack , some tight , so DILgot a new one

It would never occur to me not to replace the string. I had my previous rotary dryer about 30 years, only changed it because I forgot to pack it when we moved house. The current one we have had for nearly 27 years.

Readily available on ebay. The search terms I used were rotary washing line spares.

Replacement lines for rotary dryers are sold in Wilko

If you go onto the websites for various brands, they often sell replacement ropes.

I replaced our line as the rotary part was ok. When that line gave up i replaced the whole thing but it had lasted 20years so cant complain. Very pleased with the new one as you can adjust the height.
