Clean it, Fix it…

I’m totally obsessed with this programme and, oh joy, realising that series one isn’t on catchup I’ve found it on utube. I’ve just deep cleaned my upstairs toilet. I’ve never been able to keep it clean and it isn’t without trying. I had it fitted when the previous one was problematic and the plumber who was very happy to fit a new one for me obviously wanted to get rid of one of a job lot of cheap toilets. I can’t even buy a new toilet seat because it’s a discontinued shape and the fittings aren’t replaceable. It’s got lots of dirt trap areas, too.Anyways I’ve spent two hours attacking it with Bicarbonate, vinegar and tea tree oil and it’s gleaming! Then tonight I can watch more of season one! I’m having a new bathroom cabinet soon as well so I can keep it more clutter free.

I enjoy watching the series - for fun but don't find it helps much (as I keep my place clean, don't hoard - and I'm good at diy/carpentry).

If I ever need to find out how to do something, I just look it up on YouTube. I regularly buy the 5 litre bottles of white vinegar, as I use a lot of it:

You mean you don’t appreciate Asher’s amazing skills, I certainly do? He’s such a perfectionist - I could do with him around the house and garden for a few weeks even though I can do basic carpentry myself.

If you want a nice smell through your house, put a few drops of vanilla essence in a small pan of of water and slow boil it on the hob for about 15 minutes

Vanilla is my favourite scent. Will try this
I did try the rice and oil drops, but found that it did not seem to keep the scent for very long. Have now placed that jar in my underwear drawer.

Many decades ago, back in the 1950's when I was a hairdressing apprentice, we used to clean the mirrors in the Salon using newspaper.

Oh no. The series has finished. I don’t know what to do with myself now. I did find one other episode from series one on utube. I think utube feeds me an occasional episode just to keep me interested. Had to get my toilet seat fixed this morning so good job I deep cleaned it the other day!

Evidently there are 33 episodes over two series. So, you should be able to find lots of these on Catch up.

I must say that after about half a dozen episodes i found Maxine's 'cleaning' solution were rather repetitive. It is the carpenter that I would like to adopt.

Anyway just to let you know that on 1st July at 2.00 in the morning you will find an replayed episode/

What is ‘rubbing alcohol’ that was used on yesterdays programme? I’ve heard about it before but never worked out what it is or where to get it from. Is it like surgical spirit?

Yes, in the Uk it is surgical spirit. The othe thing they use in the States is denatured alcohol - known here as methylated spirit (ie, meths)

I’ve found some more episodes from series one on utube. They seem to use more extreme cleaning products in series one. I’m afraid to say that I bought some pink stuff cleaning stuff today. I went out looking for soapy wood cleaner, which no one seems to sell any more and was tempted by the pink stuff. I’m cleaning my porch in preparation for my new front door and I’ve sprayed everywhere with peppermint in an attempt to keep the spiders away.

True, the show was a game change for me in a way. Never liked cleaning but the show proved that it can be not tiresome at all.

I really love it. But I still can’t access series one and there doesn’t seem to be a new series in the pipeline.

Oh joy! Just came in from walking the dog, put the tv on and there’s a new series! I thought that Sort Your Life Out in Five Days had superseded it. The peppermint with rice was a disaster, though. When a mouse got into my kitchen recently it was actually eating the rice having chewed through the cotton lid I’d made. I can’t even begin to explain why this programme makes me so happy. Even the dog’s watching it….

Winnie learning how to clean the washing machine…

It must be just me then who finds the whole thing annoying, time for the off button.

MayBee70 Wed 14-Feb-24 16:42:49

I love it. It makes me want to start cleaning everything! I just wish someone would come along and sort my house out for me.

Gwyllt Wed 14-Feb-24 17:08:38

I hate those programs they make it look so easy.

Callistemon21 Wed 14-Feb-24 17:22:34

Must try the bicarbonate, white vinegar and tea tree oil on the loo.

What proportions do you use?

karmalady Thu 15-Feb-24 06:24:26

I loved the episode yesterday and checked my washing machine last night. I have never thought to clean inside the top of the rubber seal. It was not bad but there was a bit of grubbiness up there

I also loved how a homely workable craft room came about after such a cluttered mess. Good storage ideas too. I would have made sure to have supported the sides of the new crafting table. One of my heavy machines on one side would have tilted it and I noticed that they had placed a machine on each side to stop that

I zip lock or vac pack all my wools against moths. Those herb bags would not be enough to keep them away. The utility area was also an inspiring fix

It may seem trivial, but my disabled daughter has a drink bottle with a long, bendy plastic drinking tube, how do I clean the tube? Bottle brushes only go so far, so it`s clean for about 8" at each end, but the rest looks disgusting, despite me soaking it twice a day. I`ve written to the suppliers, NRS Medical supplies, but no reply.

Look up cleaning a "camelback bladder".
My son had one for cycling which we cleaned with a bleach solution and a long flexible wire brush.
His friend used a long piece of dowel and pipe cleaners. He pushed the pipe cleaner through the tube with the long thin stick after a bleach solution soak.
Hope this helps.

Actually there's probably lots of options these days and other makes of bladder. If there's not much online for camelback you may find a long flexible brush at a sports shop that does running or cycling supplied.
Good luck.

Try this!

I see this has been solved!
Note to self - don't answer till you get to the very end.
Apologies.

Where do you buy the essential oils?
Do you buy white vinegar in bulk? If so, where from please?

I get my white vinegar in 5l containers from eBay. Lots of it available there.

MayBee70 Thu 15-Feb-24 12:08:54

I buy essential oils from Holland and Barrett. Mind you, after spraying everything with peppermint oil I read that it is dangerous if you have a dog. As is tea tree oil. I’ve recently started using more zip lock bags for everything. I do hate using plastic but they get a lot of use: I have some that I’ve used for years. A local cheap shop sells vinegar in large containers. I did read though that vinegar and bicarbonate neutralise each other so all you need in drains is bicarb and hot water.

Patsy70 Thu 15-Feb-24 12:59:20

Which series and episode was this on MayBee70, as I would love my toilets to ‘sparkle’?

MayBee70 Thu 15-Feb-24 13:10:36

I think it must be one of the new ones which I haven’t seen yet. I have a problem toilet. I had it fitted a few years ago and it’s cheap and horrible and smells if I don’t clean it constantly. Instead of smooth porcelain everywhere it’s quite rough. Also I can’t replace the toilet seat as it’s a shape that is no longer made. I think the plumber had a job lot of cheap toilets that he wanted to use up.

Patsy70 Thu 15-Feb-24 14:11:50

Thank you. We live in a very hard water area, and this doesn’t help with cleaning! 🙄

Nannan2 Thu 15-Feb-24 14:15:46

Clean it fix it is back?😊

Nannan2 Thu 15-Feb-24 14:17:25

You cn get 5litres white vinegar from ocado.
