I have moved into a house which has textured vinyl flooring in the kitchen which is a nightmare. It was new but when I saw it my heart sank as I knew being textured all the dirt from muddy dog paws and general wear was going to be absorbed into the grain and be nearly impossible to be removed without regular scrubbing. My last kitchen had Rhino floor smooth vinyl which was brilliant and lasted 20 years and still looked good when we moved. After being here 6 months this flooring looks dreadful. Looks as if it has been down years. I have now found out they do not make Rhino floor in a smooth finish anymore due to people slipping. Its floor boards underneath so I cannot even have it ceramic tiled. Has anyone in there kitchen got a hard wearing vinyl flooring which only requires a quick mop over like my last one. I have spent hours this morning scrubbing it with a brush and cleaner and it still looks awful. Its got to go!!

Sorry thought I’d posted a new post ! Please ignore
Anyone recently installed a non slip shower tray ? I’m thinking of the Ideal Standard Ultra Flat S which has a C rating for being anti slip - the highest I believe .
I used to work for floor restorers. All hard floors are inherently slippery, especially when wet. But a texture increases the friction co-efficient, thus making the floor less slippery. But of course the texture (imagine sandpaper) means that there are lots of crevices for dirt and grease to hide in, thus making them a PITA to clean, especially since that grease and dirt attracts more of the same. Here’s how the professionals deep clean waterproof floors, things like stone and Altro (which is the slightly sparkly non slip stuff you often find in public loos). Mix up your preferred cleaning solution (I’d use one with good anti grease properties here) and test in an inconspicuous area in case it damages the floor. Protect adjacent floors with old towels or whatever, because you are going to puddle the solution on the floor - imagine a washing machine or dishwasher flood, but a bit less dramatic! It may be easier to dam the floor in sections to do this. Let the solution dwell a little while, and agitate it with a brush/broom. Let it dwell a bit more, and agitate again. Then remove the now dirty solution, a wet and dry vacuum is good for this, but you can mop it up. Now the floor is actually clean, regular wiping/mopping/steam cleaning should be more effective, but you’ll need to repeat the deep clean periodically.
I have always understood that steam cleaners should NOT be used for vinyl type flooring.
Never needed that in case. In my last house I had Amtico in my through lounge (looking identical to the original 1930's parquet flooring in the hallway). It was down for sixteen years when I moved out, having had pets, babies, etc and one end a dining room. Looked the same as the day it was laid - only ever mopped over.
Now have Karndean flooring thoughout my flat. Love it. All I ever do is a weekly vacuum and the occasional mop (Vileda 1-2 spray mop). Karndean also in kitchen (mopped every two or three days), and en-suite and bathroom, . Everything always clean and bright.
My flooring people cover whatever is there (concrete or floorboards) with plyboard before laying this vinyl. All has a lifetime (not mine) guarantees, which is transferable to whoever lives here after me. Only room with carpet is my own bedroom.
It is all so very easy to keep clean and any small spills never cause me any problem.
I have Karndean in my kitchen and hall . Nothing stains it looks lovely.
I have Karndean smooth vinyl tiles in my kitchen diner. The y haven't been there very long but, so far, my cleaner and I are delighted how easy they are to keep clean.
As Jaxjacky says, plywood under the tiles should be just the job. I recently had a quote for vinolay over floorboards, and he recommended this method.
I had my kitchen replaced last year and had LVT tiles put down on a large area through to dining room. They are finely textured so no slipping even the dog has learnt to slow down on them. They are a stone effect pattern and I have found them really good. They hardly show any dirt and a quick mop is all they need. I got quite a few samples before I chose them, all were textured some more than others.
Is there really no vinyl flooring that can be easily cleaned without a steam cleaner?
Marmoleum?
I agree, textured is horrid to keep clean. I have no pets or steam cleaner, but even getting everyday spills off is a nightmare. Wouldn't mind but I chose it.
I would strip and sand then put several coats of a clear (preferably Yacht) varnish on your floorboards.
Lovely.
A good contractor should be able to prepare any kind of floor for the covering on your choice.
The best product I have used is Dr Schultz floor care kit it costs around £40 but brought my 20 years plus LVT floor up better than anything else
You get 3 products the initial clean and strip gets the much out of the groves Then you apply 2 coats of floor mat to seal it. They also provide a regular floor cleaner for daily use.
Saved me buying new flooring as ours covers quite a large area.
It was quite hard work but worth it.
I dont use my steam cleaner now as it ruined the grout in slate bathrooms floor tiles and also my karndean hall floor was laid in strips and the steam mop was damaging the strips which is something else to be aware of.
Another recommendation for a steam cleaner from me. But don't get the cheapest brand. I made that mistake and it stopped delivering steam one month after the guarantee ran out. The replacement is fine.
Amtico in the hall here no problem with pets.
You have my sympathy, the previous owner of our house put down riven stone tiles in the kitchen. Every bit of dirt sits in the indentations, added to that the grouting is recessed.
I’d get rid of it tomorrow, but unfortunately, it has electric underfloor heating. We will probably rip the whole lot up - shortly!!
Thank you for your replies. I will investigate further.
I just recently got mine replaced it drove me mad and I tried everything.
My DS has replaced with a product that looks like laminate but is backed with slate. I am so far very impressed but I can't think of the name of it.
Mine is textured vinyl made to look like tiles. I use a steam mop on it. We had a dog and now we have a cat, the flooring looks pretty good for being 20+ years old.
We have Karndean in our large hallway and it is smooth but it must be 10years ago since it was put down.. Amtico i think is another brand which may be worth researching. Upstairs we had plywood put down in the bathrooms before they were tiled. I think with more research you will find something suitable.
If you lay ply over the floorboards you can ceramic tile over the top, any decent tiler should be able to do that.
