Venetian blinds and upvc windows

So, I’m having to have two new bedroom windows and am replacing the wood with upvc. My windows are huge and I have Venetian blinds for privacy. But I’ve realised that I’m not supposed to screw anything into the upvc. I feel like I’m in a goldfish bowl when the curtains are open. My handyman says it’s ok to screw the blinds back in but I daren’t risk ruining the warranty. I’ve noticed that one of my neighbours has blinds up: I may ask them how they’ve been fitted. I may have to somehow incorporate net curtains into the other curtains or at least have blackout linings.

My problem is they’re very wide windows and I can’t really drill into the concrete lintel above. There was talk of needing to strengthen the lintel before the windows could be replaced but I managed to get away with that. Roller blinds aren’t quite as heavy so can be screwed into the side.

I have Venetian Blinds on all windows (and curtains) and I haven’t even thought about how they are fitted 😂 they were installed over 10 years ago.

I have venetian blinds and upvc windows. The blinds are fitted inside on the upper window recess drilled in neatly. No need to drill the window frames themselves.

Our venetian blinds in the bedrooms are fitted to the side of the window recess, not to the upvc.

Not totally. I’ve currently got a piece of cardboard resting against the bathroom window while I decide what blind to get for it!

Mine are up into the lintel which I had to have replaced earlier. The old wood one rotted away. 1930s houses are well built but at almost 100 years old what can you expect

I imagine the problem is solved, this thread is nearly a year old.

I’ve now replaced all of the bedroom windows and the bathroom. I realised that I couldn’t screw anything into the window frames anyway because of the ventilation that new windows now have. So I’ve now got blinds that screw into the side walls. I’m keeping the wooden windows downstairs because they haven’t rotted in the way the bedroom windows have, as they don’t have sides that open; they were the areas that went rotten.

Hi Maybe Mr. S. used to fit blinds and says for a 6ft wide window you'll need 3 brackets; one at each end and one in the middle.

It also depends in the weight of the blinds. Wooden Venetians are or course heavier.

I chose high quality upv windows, they promised me that they would be strong and durable.
Replacing the old window was rotten which caused leakage problems during heavy rains, so this time I wanted to do it right. Since the window is on the roof, installing roof lights made of upv was the only solution that was weather resistant.
For blinds, I decided to go with ones that attach directly to the window frame, like in your situation with upv windows. This installation not only looks elegant, but also ensures a tight fit without compromising the integrity of the window structure.

Venetian blinds. They’re currently screwed into the wood.

You are referring to Venetian blinds and not plantation blinds, as some here are confusing the two.?

Yes , I think I’m one of them!

Thank goodness I decided to replace just two of the windows for now. I was going to replace all of them because the company gave me such a good price but it’s stressful enough having just two replaced. Maybe I’ll just move into the back bedroom which still has a blind!

My day/night blind fittings are fixed to the walls of the window inset. My vertical blinds are fitted to the lintels.

I have a wooden plantation blind in front of a large UPV window which is hung from a wooden batten just above.and painted the same colour as the wall.

I had new upvc windows fitted a couple of months ago. As my old venetian blinds were looking very tired and grubby, I decided to have white faux-wood ones from Hillarys.

They look really nice. Much fresher than my old ivory- coloured aluminium ones. They were screwed above the windows and the upvc was not touched.

As you say, though, MayBee, if there’s a problem with the lintel, this might turn out to be pretty costly for you.

I hope all goes well for you, though. It’s lovely when you have something new and it all goes to plan. Good luck!

I have Venetian blinds and upv windows.

The blinds are not screwed into the windows themselves.
They are fitted on the wall, just inside window frame.
If that makes any sense.

Hillary’s blinds fitted them, so get a quote.

We had wood (painted white) trimmed out - all the way round the new pvc windows. In necessary areas had blinds hung in the wood.

We have blinds incorporated into the double glazing. The slats are quite narrow. They can be operated by a magnetic(?) slide gizmo. Worth asking the company.

perfect fit blinds, no screws needed and no marks made on upvc. I have them on every upstairs window and on each of my 4 french doors and would buy them again. I had the insulating ones in the house and the venetian blind one on the garage window and the slats are easily tilted or moved up and down

MayBee70 Wed 28-Jun-23 13:44:21

I’ve asked the window company. They said to ask the window fitters. If they’re prepared to put the blind back up it won’t affect the warranty. I’ll get them cleaned up just in case!

Hetty, those blind that are inbetween the two panes of glass are great until there's a fault. Friend of mine had them and had to have whole new window fitted when the blinds stopped going up and down, very expensive.

Gwenisgreat1 Wed 28-Jun-23 12:06:54

Our Venetian blinds are fixed on to the surrounding walls -maybe that's the answer?

I have literally had blinds fitted to my UPVC French Doors, last week. They are fitted into the existing UPVC frame, using another smaller frame that the venetian blinds sit in. I am very impressed with them. Little pricey, but so worth it. Also had the same concept fitted in my UPVC Bay Window, but roller blinds. They are so good.
