Not just car insurance but Home insurance doubling [shock]

Just received my new Home insurance quote and it has doubled.! good job I was sat down, yes I suppose with all the storms and damage we have to expect. Mine is just a basic cover nothing extra no add ons.

But I have never made a claim ever. I think it is time Insurance companies (they may be one I haven't looked yet ,that do recognise people that have not made a claim)

Swinton by the way.

I received a car insurance quote this week and couldn't believe the price. We have a very old car (2009) a Clio which I use, the cost last year was just over £350 this year it is £595. The agent said cost had raised 50 - 80% this year. I suspect the cost is more than the car is worth.

Just had a letter for building insurance and it’s Double last year’s premium. No claim amd nothing has changed,
Needless to say I have another job to add to my list chasing up all sorts of things.

Interesting pooohbear2811 - at one point the AA said they would only bring 5 people home or wherever and we had a 8 seater Peugeot (and 5 children)...

So their promise to "get you home" or to your destination was a bit ridiculous.

Our pet insurance for the dog jumped massively as well, twice what I am currently paying for car insurance. I did phone them up and they gave me a 15% discount - why not the lower price in the first place??? yes, apathy.

Make sure if you are looking to change you read the t&c's through because sometimes cheapest isn't always best.
The breakdown cover we got with our car does not cover punctures/wheel changing or transport pets.
As an oap this may well be needed one day. So I am paying for my own breakdown cover over and above just in case I ever have a puncture, and the dog is in the car for most of the mileage we do so need her rescuing as well.
Got you over a barrel, they know we all need it legally so can charge what they like.

Thankyou NotSaghettisunshine

Our house insurance isn’t up for renewal yet, but last year we had a house fire and fully expected to have a huge hike in insurance costs, however the new premium was hardly more than the previous year. Our car insurance has risen sharply though (different company) and our business insurance will be due in the Spring. 😱

Can't find the article I read now but this states similar if you need "proof" keepcalm

www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-12495793/Home-insurance-prices-rocket-25-7-just-ONE-YEAR.html#:~:text=Households%20in%20London%20face%20far,in%20the%20past%20three%20months.

25% is still a lot though!

keepcalmandcavachon Thu 18-Jan-24 10:36:50

Well done NotSpaghetti! That's a very clever tactic, I shall file it away for latersmile

My house insurance was quoted as 57% more than last year - by this I mean that for £100 last year, this year it would have been £157.
I checked with all the comparison sites and it was still amongst the lowest for what I need. shock

I called them and pointed out that industry wide the increase in house insurance was 25-27% and asked was mine a mistake?
They went away and came back with a much better offer. Still up 25% but worth the call. 👍

Not insurance related but somerset council tax is likely up by 10% and I just had notice that my car tax is up by 10%

It is all adding up to very much more than the increase I saw via my pension

Gwyllt

Options
Phone up and complain ( negotiate a better deal ) often works
General advice is shop around
Massive rise in husbands car insurance ( he presumed it was his age ) new quote only slightly above last years

Negotiating did not work for me though it has in the past. The LV agent said there was no discretion. I've been with them for years without a claim so I'm fed up. I hope my LV house quote isn't going up too.

Boz I did that, I had a very good chat with a real person in the uk. We tried 1k fewer miles per year but that came in higher. I have two named drivers on my policy, which was actually £441 this year. I cant complain

karmalady Wed 17-Jan-24 16:58:11

I needed to know actual details and looked up my saga house insurance. I had a really good deal for house and contents and the price was fixed for three years, so this year will be exactly the same as last year. It was a good decision.

Boz Wed 17-Jan-24 16:56:26

Make sure you are not overestimating your yearly mileage. My dh realised we dont do that much mileage these days and when he adjusted the form a lower price came in.

Kim19 Wed 17-Jan-24 16:39:10

I've heard various financial advisers recommending that it is good practice to start investigating insurance quotes about a month before your policy due date. Apparently these quotes 'hold' if your current company comes in with a ridiculous price. I fouled up with this last year and left it too late when my hugely increased renewal letter
came in from Direct Line. Not looking forward to this chore at all but hopefully the result will be worth it. We'll see........

dogsmother Wed 17-Jan-24 14:25:16

Ours ( house insurance ) was up for renewal this year……shocked at rise we’ve tried the shopping around route …….even more shocked to find we had the best deal already!!

bikergran Wed 17-Jan-24 14:21:36

Yes I had better get laptop at the ready to search for quotes.

Thankfully when looking for car insurance they have at least made it a little easier for us just having to fill one form in. I know this does not cover some of the Companies.

silverlining48 Wed 17-Jan-24 10:25:30

MY car insurance doubled in October without any claims or changes. Tried to find something cheaper but all the comparison sites were very similar. Wondered if it’s a cartel! !

Tizliz Wed 17-Jan-24 10:23:25

yggdrasil

I used compare the market when my car insurance renewal was twice what it had been. So again I am with a new insurer with a much lower price. I do not understand why insurers raise payments so much for renewals unless they expect most peopel to just pay without checking

Automatic renewal - be careful you don't have this or it will renew at that horrible price before you realise

silverlining48 Wed 17-Jan-24 10:23:14

I think that’s what insurance companies do expect-apathy.

For house insurance I was with More Than last year. Online I could have bought insurance for half of what they fancied charging me and that was More Than. I am now with Direct Line paying considerably less than More Than.

karmalady Wed 17-Jan-24 09:49:52

I did the comparisons but have stayed with the one I know, they did give me £10 off but really all the quotes were similar. Car insurance is up 48%

House insurance is due next month, I am shocked to read about premiums potentially doubling. Both with saga

I also hear that my somerset council tax will rise by 10% because we are broke as a county.

Jaxjacky Wed 17-Jan-24 09:41:30

Our house insurance is due next month, that’ll be half a day shopping around.

Sago Wed 17-Jan-24 09:11:22

My daughter has had to sell her car as the insurance went up to 11K!
Apparently Albanian gangs are targeting land rovers.
They live in the middle of nowhere!
