Miele fridge freezer is not cooling in fridge.

Primrose. You are spot on.I looked on line but the ones coming up were £200;or more. I also didn’t know if I could be sure what I would end up paying. I needed a local man to be recommended. Yes thank goodness my daughter took charge.Mollygo Your Siemens certainly did you proud. Our Miele was only 7 years old and according to the blurbs they last over 20 years. Our previous fridge freezers had lasted many years and 7 years seemed nothing. That’s why we thought aMiele engineer would sort it out. He was here for two hours defrosting an ice block behind a panel which couldn’t be seen and testing lots of things on his laptop. He changed a sensor so thought all was well. Sounds as if you have the same fridge freezer as I now have. So far great and a two year guarantee.

End of story.is daughter came to take me to Bluewater JL on Sunday. She looked at the fridge and said it was room temperature and the reason the veg had been ruined was there was also no air circulating. She threw yoghurts out as lids had blown. Saw a 50/50 Bosch fridge freezer priced £545 so much cheaper than my Miele. As at this point I was using a cool bag to keep milk in by freezing bottles of water and the appointment with Miele was the 21st with no assurance that problem was going to be fixed then and my daughter talking very firmly about how people of our age could end up in hospital with food poisoning I ordered the one we saw and paid £20 extra for next day delivery and free recycling. Delivered in a time slot and now delighting in a very cold fridge which my fridge thermometer now tells me is safe, the same thermometer the engineer said wasn’t working and to ignore it. Have learnt lessons from this as I wasted £279 pounds on a call out a which would have gone a long way towards my new one. I will never again trust a digital temperature display as my.Miele defiantly remained at 4 even when it was room temperature.

£279 on callout! A local service engineer would have been less than £50 and could have diagnosed that.

Our Siemens fridge freezer was 24 years old and had a peculiar smell, didn’t keep things as cold as it used to, plus water collected in the fridge base. I emptied it and defrosted it twice twice, but when the problem re occurred, we decided to get a new one. An engineer, if it had been like your Miele one would have cost nearly as much as the original fridge freezer.
We’ve bought a Bosch 50/50 too. It came with free delivery, unpacking and removal of old unit. It’s frost free and I can easily regulate the temperature. Long may they last!

Been looking at replacement fridge freezer and thought maybe a Bosch but then another problem the Miele is 59.5 of a centimetre and I can’t fit anything bigger in the space we have. So nearly all 60 but dh says we can’t risk anything bigger so off to John Lewis with a tape measure on Monday. Hmmmm I’m not a happy bunny.

Lovetopaint037 if these autodefrost f/fs do not defrost at exactly the right time (which they are programmed to do) then the ice builds up.

TinSoldier I think the fridges that go on for years and years and I have had them for long periods have separate units and manual defrosting. The one I have will only allow the fridge to be independently turned off. Might be wrong but that is my theory. Miele are “supposed” to last 20 years or more. If this was a washing machine it would have been replaced but at around 1500 plus it is different problem. It is possible to get cheaper ones but I bought this as it had 4 good size drawers and most others were more fridge than freezer. If this one plays up though I will revert to a more affordable one.

I see so many fridge freezers put out on the pavement for the council to collect. I wonder how many people have encountered the same problem you had but just chuck the appliance out and buy a new one.

TinSoldier I asked him this and he said although frost free means you don’t have ice in the drawers there is a gradual build up of ice as you open and close doors in general use. For a long time I was cursing the water collecting in the bottom shelf and forever poking wire etc down the condensation hole. In fact I put the problem on here and received lots of advice. Then recently it was obvious the fridge was “warming up” although the digital display was set to the recommended 4. I also mentioned the problem about the water never thinking it was related to anything but a normal blockage which we couldn’t shift. So we live and learn.

That's interesting. Did he say why there had been a build up of ice? I think you mentioned that you hadn't defrosted in seven years as there was no build up of ice inside the cabinet. In other words, was it a fault with the machine e.g. a failed sensor or was it to do with not defrosting regularly?

Just in case anyone is interested in the outcome of my problem. Yesterday a Miele engineer came and said the usual reason for the water collecting in the bottom of the fridge even though the hole is not blocked is that ice has built up behind the freezer unit. Although there is no sign of ice in the freezer there is a plate which he unscrewed and there it was a big block of ice. He had to use a powerful de-icer to melt it and then in the fridge to melt whatever was down the usual hole. You couldn’t see him for all the fog. He then tested the electrics and changed tone of the sensors. Hopefully it will be okay. I paid a set price for the visit which has to be quoted on the phone but this includes all work done and parts with a year’s guarantee. In that way you know you won’t be paying any more.

My fridge is set at 6 and my freezer at -21 - these seem quite adequate.

I have a separate Miele fridge and freezer which are 14 years old. They both have an electronic display showing the temperature inside. I have never had to turn either off as the freezer defrosts itself.
I would think any service engineer can fix it.

Sounds like the fan on your compressor has packed up. You definitely need a service engineer. A local one would be a lot cheaper than Miele.

If I turn it off for a few mins then I turn it back on it goes down from 14 to 3 which I can see from the thermometer is colder than the higher nos. It showed just outside the normal fridge range but despite remaining on 3 the thermometer shows it has gone up and you can tell from the feel of it. We have an afternoon theatre matinee tomorrow. It’s a Christmas present so have to go. Hoping to try defrosting the freezer in case that is affecting the fridge when I get home. If not Friday morning and then speak to Miele if that doesn’t work. Never had this with previous fridge freezers which lasted for years. The only difference is that this one is supposed to defrost itself and I can’t see any build up of ice.

also have you got the alarms on? If you have then the alarm will go off if the temperature gets too high if eg the door is not closed properly. You need to keep the door seals clean. I wipe the seals on mine every so often.

They are easy to pull out if you empty them, just heap the contents somewhere and cover in blankets. You need to check that the tube by the back condenser is also clear, can be done with eg a pipe cleaner. While out, vacuum the coils behind.

You say fridge/freezer, is it one that does not get frosted? If the freezer is frosted then it needs to be de-frosted regularly otherwise the compressor motor will struggle

Sounds like you need to get an engineer out …

Ps Had a salter thermometer delivered today and it shows that even on 4 it is not in the safe zone. That is better than earlier today when it was obvious that the temperature had gone right down and this was shown on the gauge.

My other fridge freezers have been a lot older than this one. We have attempted to clean the channel which takes water but no sign of any kind of build up. We have clambered up to the top to to make sure there is no signs of dust etc between the fridge freezer and the wall. There are fitted spacers there to allow air to circulate. Once before my dh attempted to pull the VERY large fridge freezer out and he found this very hard as he is 84 .No sign then and that is when we first noticed water in the salad boxes despite no sign of a blockage.

A fridge needs to be set at 5 degrees C and a freezer needs to be at -18 degrees C

I have a miele fridge set at the optimum (best) temperature of 5 degrees

I do clear out or rotate my veg in the drawers, they do not keep indefinitely eg carrots can get mouldy if they are old when you buy them

You need to clean the the condensation channel inside and the cooling grill behind. Like any fridge it does need a bit of maintenance. Also make sure there is an air gap behind it, between it and the wall

The number is the actual required temperature ie 4 is colder than 5 but 5 is perfect

What you really need to do is buy a fridge thermometer so you can if the temperature is at a safe level. They are quite cheap.
And it sounds as if you need to get an engineer to look at it.
And yes, check it doesn't need defrosting.

It just goes on and on, yes orobsbly a record. Her boiler was 55 years old and still working 10 years after British Gas refused to service it on her contract.
Modern Boilers and clearly fridges /freezers too seem to have in built obsolescence
