Has anyone got a basic washing machine they could recommend please.

I think buying cheaper electrical goods can ultimately be false economy .But to be honest it sounds like the luck of the draw. You can hear good and terrible reports about the same machine.
If possible I would buy from John Lewis as they have a 2 year guarantee and, I think, have tried and tested the things they sell. Also excellent customer service if something goes wrong.

John Lewis own products are really good. Their own make dishwasher and hob are still going strong after 15 years.

Oh, that's good.
I reckon it has to do with the model, and how old it is.
Mine had eco this, and eco that, but three hours a wash is ridiculous, I think.

It is ridiculous! 180 mins (3hrs) is the longest on mine which I never use. I mainly use the 30 and 60 mins.

I have a 15 minute wash on my hoover, as well as some that are short ish.

I really disliked the hotpoint; most of those cycles were 2 and 3 hours long.

My Hotpoint has 9 minute, 15 min, 30 min, 60 min and so on cycles.

Cheap, over expensive, limited budget. For me always been Indesit, washer dryer, moved a couple of times, lasted 12 years, now another Indesit, basic model, very good, very quite, Eco and quick wash settings. In use hopefully another 12 years.

We had indesit 22 yrs, was mil, she had had it years before moving, so maybe older that that- bought a Siemens only lasted 3 yrs. Beko supposed to be good & cheap!

yes. 7kg Bosch is mine.. has 15 wash which I give an extra 1400 spin and a Daily 60min wash, you can adjust degee from 60c through to 30c if want, and can adjust spin from 1400c down to 1000c if want depending what you are washing.

my neighbour has a hoover which takes 2hours to do a wash.

Thank you, I think I will go John Lewis and gave a Beko, a cheap one.

Mine is a7kg Bosch. Had it for 7 years. Was not expensive AO.com

My white goods are always the cheapest usually Beko or Indesit and have always been great. Moved house last year and the previous owners left their expensive ma hine behind. It calculated the weight of the wash, had cou tress programmes, could be worked from a Smart phone, etc and I hated it. Lucky
I still had my old ma hine which my son fitted. It has three programmes which I use - a 60 min one, a 30 min one and a spin only one.

My first automatic washing machine was a Zanussi. It lasted about 20 years and was recommended by my then neighbour who was the manager of an appliance store. When it eventually died I asked the advice of a small dealer in the local town where we lived at the time as they had carried out the only repair that had ever been done on the Zanussi. They advised that to match the quality I should buy a Bosch. Over 20 years on it is still going strong!
I bought a 'graded' one from them - a nearly new one that had either been sent back with a fault and been factory refitted or had minor damage to the outside such as a scratched casing not visible once in place. Normal guarantee given. They often had 'graded' appliances and I bought a few from them and saved quite a bit doing so. Get advice from a local company that does repairs. They know which ones are most reliable.
As I now live alone and am approaching 70 years old I may go for a cheaper one if the Bosch lets me down as it doesn't get the same amount of use from me as it would in a family, but at the moment it's still reliable. Just hope I haven't spoken too soon!

John Lewis is free delivery. Some in Argos are free to deliver too. AO.com charge £35. So worth looking around online. When you find one you like google the make/model to see if it's cheaper elsewhere factoring in delivery.
I had a basic Zanussi which lasted me £10 years then I gave it away still working. Now a Hotpoint which I've had 5 years.

10 years not £10 years grin I wish there was an edit button!

Well last washing machine was a hoover and it didn’t even last three years so I’ve spent a bit more money and got a Bosch which had the offer at the time of five years warranty which included parts labour and callout so I’m happy with that

twiglet77 Wed 20-Mar-24 18:28:50

My Siemens is 10 years old and I’ve been delighted with it. The two Bosch machines that preceded it were surprisingly disappointing in terms of longevity, though the family were all still at home then and we had horses, so they worked harder.

I briefly had an AEG and the engineer said they are absolutely hopeless in hard water areas like this. My Hotpoint had a breakdown every nine months over the 9 years I had that one, never again, nor Hoover. Samsung are “Marmite” appliances and I hate them. Zanussi aren’t as good as they were 40 years ago.

Beko have a firm fan base for inexpensive machines but I haven’t used one.

It's another consideration; the delivery costs, where do they deliver to, do they unpack or install it, and do they take the old one away.

I recommend Zanussi; my last one was 18 yrs old when it died, so I have just bought another one from AO.

I started with a Hoover - never again, then bought a Hotpoint, ok but didn’t last. I then went with LG and have never looked back - brilliant machine, easy to use and middle range for prices.

There are companies which specialise in selling returned goods, end of line, ex display and unboxed white goods. I have bought several items including a high end double oven for £300 rather than £700. It had a tiny dink on the side. Of course there is always an element of risk involved, but our experience has been excellent. If you do a bit of digging there might be somewhere in your area? I have found that there are very transparent about any damage etc as I guess they want the repeat trade. Quite often there is absolutely nothing wrong with the items other than missing packaging. Just a thought…

MissAdventure Wed 20-Mar-24 12:53:23

I had a hotpoint like that.
Given to me by a friend, who had bought it secondhand, and had a family of six, then I had it for over 25 years with just one repair ever.
It was still working, so I put it outside and hopefully it did whoever took it a turn, too.

Lexisgranny Wed 20-Mar-24 12:43:29

My Ariston Washer/Dryer served me well for over 25 years before honourable retirement. (The only repair I had done was to replace a circuit board). It was purely for cosmetic reasons - poor old girl was starting to rust badly, but she was true to the advertising slogan, Ariston did go on and on!

MissAdventure Wed 20-Mar-24 12:31:24

My new Hoover machine seems to have a much bigger drum than my last machine, which was a hotpoint.
I'm amazed how much I can ram fit in there!

missdeke Wed 20-Mar-24 12:29:33

I had a cheap Hoover with a small drum that was trouble right from the start. I have now replaced it with a Grundig, not too expensive, has short and eco cycles and a larger drum, and was slightly smaller in overall size than everything else and fits in my kitchen very well, has been an easy use.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 20-Mar-24 12:29:29

Eight years ago when we moved here, we bought the cheapest possible machine in a DIY store and it is still washing clothes far better than former machines with expensive brand names ever did.

I don't know if the same can be said of every cheap machine, but at least if you buy a cheap machine and are dissatisfied with it , you have wasted less money than buying an expensive one that proves not worth what you paid for it.

razzmatazz Wed 20-Mar-24 12:21:37

Beko.
