Sagging Roofing Felt in Loft

Can anyone please advise me?
I went into the loft last weekend to find that a portion of the roofing felt was hanging down and I could see the underside of the roof tiles. There was no sign of any damp so it doesn’t appear the rain had got in.

I was hoping to carefully lift the felt back into place and put some duct/gaffer tape on to hold it up where it should be. However, the tape won’t stick to the roofing felt.

I’ve googled lots of stuff and am having trouble finding a suitable product to stick the felt back. There’s a special tape but that seems to be used for waterproofing outside joints against walls etc. There’s a tin of bitumen glue to paint on but that keeps being referred to as a type of roofing felt undercoat. I’ve also come across some black mastic stuff.

The more I read the more confused I get. Someone I know has some roof lathes I am hoping to slide in to make it more secure, after I’ve managed to get the roofing felt back up in place.

It’s not a huge problem area - probably only down 3 or 4 of the roof truss channels.

I really don’t think this warrants the expense of scaffolding and removing the roof tiles and replacing all the roofing felt from the outside. I was just hoping for an effective way to mend it from the underside of the roof.

Please does anyone have any knowledge of how I can get the felt back up where it should be?

I would get someone who knows about roofing to look at it. You might be surprised by what they suggest.

Is it kind of boards, between the rafters/joists (don’t know the correct name)? If so, lots of ours popped out after Storm Arwen in 2021.

We got some local joiners to come and repair/replace them, as necessary. They simply hammered them back into place and on some of them put a new strip of wood from side to side to secure them. It wasn’t hugely expensive and only took a day or so.

I would definitely get a professional roofer, and they can probably do it from the inside as you say. A recommendation by your neighbours for someone honest and reliable can be found if you register on Next Door website. It's very useful. If in doubt get anther quote, or even a third.

IamMaz - you are probably a young agile grandma - but roofing problems are best left to a Roofer . Good luck !

Thank you all. I have spoken to a reputable roofing firm who have advised me that there’s no need to do anything - unless we are planning to sell! Which we are not. The tiles are water tight. There’s no risk of any leaks.

However, I just want it to look better in the loft. I’m thinking of fitting strips of new felt between the roof trusses which will support the sagging felt and give a better appearance.

I now need to work out how to attach it.
Any ideas?

If it’s watertight I would leave it IamMaz. After reassurance from a roofer I wouldn’t want to disturb anything.Don’t look at it when going up into loft.

We had the sagging felt between the roof trusses, and when I was younger, and a lot more agile, I just took a long lathe and tucked it under the truss, over the felt and under the next truss.
Job done.
