Make-up brushes. What to do with them?

I watch women on TV applying brushes to their faces but I haven't a clue what they are doing? (Think The Apprentice when the girls get up in the morning.) Surely powder is a thing of the past isn't it? They seem to have different sized brushes but what on earth for? I am definitely missing something. Then I read we need to apply primer after moisturiser. Primer? That's what my DH uses on the walls! Where am I going wrong... and can I look 20 years younger if I somehow apply brushes and primer to my face? Does anyone on here do it?

I agree with keepingquiet - a massive industry (that I don’t buy into either).

I use minimum product on my face: French soap (and water) to cleanse, a good moisturizer w/sunscreen, I dot camouflage on my dark spots/veins, two cream blush that I blend into one color, eye pencil.

I use my fingers. No brushes - that’s for powdered products. I prefer cream based products on my older skin for a dewier look.

Skincare lines include cleanser, toner, moisturizer for AM/PM, eye creme, primer, setting spray…. Which will set you back oodles of money!! Don’t fall for it. Less is more.

No idea what to do with make-up brushes other than using them when crafting. 😃

This is what professional make up artists do Riggie so that excess powder from the eyeshadow does not fall all over the beautifully applied face make up.

I watch young Women on YouTube applying make up and am amazed by how much they put on, how long it takes and how their techniques are far from gentle on the skin. I am however a recent convert to foundation brushes and am really happy with the finish they give.

My mknd boggles at the thick layers.
And what's this putting foundation and all the other shading and highlghting layers on after doing their elaborate eyeshadow?

I agree with calendar Girl, I don't use makeup anymore. Not good on an ageing skin.
Just a bit of lippy if I'm going somewhere special.

If primer means face cream then I apply that in the morning and then a light foundation. I use my fingers to do both. That's the sum total of my make up routine, unless I'm going somewhere special when I apply a bit of very subtle blusher with a brush. I only use products that are non animal tested.

Primer is an extra layer of gunk used after serum and moisturiser but before foundation! It’s meant to smooth the surface of the skin to provide a smooth base for makeup (think Polyfilla!)

Oh how I love this post 😘
For many years, in fact well into my 50’s the only thing I ever put in my face was moisturiser . With a touch of mascara as a daily routine. For nights out a tinted moisturiser, adding bronzer , eye shadow & lippy .
Like others I had a make up session at Boots , I chose Clarins as I had started using both cleanser, moisturiser & toners.
That’s where I learnt about Primers & they do the job , like an undercoat , though I have never noticed my make up slipping off my face before . I know that eyeshadow never stays put & primer under eyeshadow is worth its weight in gold .
That said I am so glad it’s getting sunnier as I can get a natural tanned face . I feel the older I get the more reliant I am on make up .

I love how all you (glamorous?) women say "it only takes a few minutes".

My skin has changed so much over the last ten years that I had to relearn how to put makeup on and what sort of makeup suited my skin. Also having worse black circles under my eyes means I sometimes look ill without makeup. During lockdown I practised by following some YouTube videos at the kitchen table where was a lot of light (and while MrA was working) so I can now do my concealer in a few minutes to cover my black circles, and I finally have some foundation that is an almost perfect match for my skin, so I don't have to worry about it looking patchy and I can put it on in seconds. It's never going to turn me into Mis World or make me look 16 but at least people don't keep asking me if I've been ill.

I supposed I should have said me neither

Quite right. I don’t rejoice in my natural looks and never have done. A little time and money make a huge difference.

me too, I sadly had a very serious car accident when I was 26, my face is covered in scars which as you get older get deeper and deeper so people always think I am older than I really am. Primer makes a huge difference to my look, without it, the makeup goes in to the deep scars and I look even worse. I am rarely seen without makeup unless I have been away and achieved a really deep tan, which I love, but those days have gone now.

Quite long, yes, BlueBelle

My hair is so fine, I’ve to blow dry it with a small round brush as fast as I can after I wash it, otherwise it just dries flat.

Patsy70 Fri 17-May-24 18:22:04

Oh, yes, and a lip brush!

Patsy70 Fri 17-May-24 18:20:43

Shouldn’t this thread be under ‘Style & Beauty’? I use a make up brush for applying my Tropic blusher, also use one for powdered eye shadow occasionally and eyebrows.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 17-May-24 18:20:38

My hair is shoulder length now, quite thick, and takes less than ten minutes to dry with a hairdryer. I don’t faff about with it. If I left it to dry naturally it would take ages and be an awful mess.

BlueBelle Fri 17-May-24 18:06:51

My hair dries in 5 minutes with a hairdryer I m guessing you ve got very long hair NotSpaghetti

BlueBelle Fri 17-May-24 18:05:10

Never ever used a brush but watched my grandaughters with all different sizes and types Mystery to me

NotSpaghetti Fri 17-May-24 17:46:39

I confess to moisturising face, neck etc morning and night.

And legs/arms after the shower.

Aveline Fri 17-May-24 17:30:49

I always used to wear make up but now I just don't. I hate the feel of greasy gunk on my face. I moisturise when I remember but don't find it makes much difference.

I find that even drying my hair with a hairdryer is so tedious that I haven't used one for at least 40 years!

My lovely hairdresser actually gave me hers as she'd bought "newer models" for the salon... eventually my daughter discovered I'd used it only once (out of guilt) and relieved me of it!

HillyN Fri 17-May-24 17:05:40

I think I must be allergic to the type of bristles used in make-up brushes because whenever I've used one (or had one used on me at a salon) my face and eyes get itchy and blotchy. If I can't use my fingers then it has to be cotton wool or a cotton bud.
Having said that I very rarely wear any make-up!

jocork Fri 17-May-24 16:52:04

I never wore anything other than eye makeup and lippy even when young. I went through a phase of having my eyelashes tinted as I hated applying mascara and often forgot I had it on so rubbed my eyes and ended up looking awful.I haven't bothered with anything now for years. My DD tried to get me to wear foundation for my DS's wedding. She took me to a big store and had me made up proffesionally. I spent about £20 on the stuff they used but then on the day couldn't apply it at all. I looked and felt awful so I washed it off and went bare skinned as usual. I won't be trying that again!
As for looking young or old, most people seem to think I'm younger than I am. Some people are surprised I'm retired and on a recent visit to A&E the nurse said she wouldn't have put me at the age I am so it doesn't seem to be doing me any harm. The only thing I do is stay out of the sun if I can as I don't like the heat. That has probably done me more good than anything over the years.
Incidentally while in A&E I saw a woman who I thought looked really ancient and doddery, then overheard her give her DOB - she was 11 years my junior!

The matriarchy really needs challenging on this one! All that time and money because - what? We look like what we look like. Rejoice!

I take the view that when nature desists, I assist nature 😁

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 17-May-24 15:46:52

If you use foundation it apparently keeps it in place and makes it easier to put on. I don’t like foundation but use primer because it gives a nice soft finish and blurs lines and pores. I also use an eye primer which keeps eye makeup in place, stops it fading and travelling !
