Disposing of a pallet

We are refitting the downstairs cloakroom and had items delivered on Monday. We are left with a large, heavy, wooden pallet and are struggling to dispose of it, it says on the plumbing supplier’s website that it is our responsibility. I phoned the council and it is something they are not able to collect which seems strange as they recently collected a large garden gate made of wood with no problem. It is too big and too heavy to get in our car to take to the tip so DH is threatening to get out his circular saw and cut it up and take the pieces of wood to the tip; the problem with this is he is on blood thinners and he scares me when he does anything involving cutting or sawing. If anybody has any ideas on how we can get rid of this pallet I would be grateful.

In which case, dispense with the pallet and sleep on the floor!

Here some homeless people use them to avoid sleeping on the ground..

and the person I knew who sanded one down bought a decent futon to sleep on.. apparently it was quite comfortable.. but each to their own

Ah, a futon. Just about the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept on. I slept on the floor in preference.

I agree Monica.. but for some needs must..

Some people sand them down and use as bed bases.. there are many uses if you are creative

Thank you for the replies, I went to tell my DH that I was putting it on FreeCycle only to find him outside with his circular saw cutting it up. I will put the wood on FreeCycle as somebody may be able to make use of it, as far as I know none of our neighbours have a wood burner.

Jane’s DH has resolved the situation. Good suggestions on here re recycling, as pallets are very much in demand.

We mounted our small shed on a pallet. It's tannelised so doesn't rot and keeps the shed dry.

Any items round here disappear within hours of being put out at the front of the house.

There’s loads of uses for pallets. My OH has made potting benches out of them. Another neighbour makes garden furniture and raised beds. Freecycle should get a taker fairly quickly. If you’ve already chopped it up you can make woodpile for insects.

My stepfather used to make chopping blocks for the kitchen years ago. Safe-to-use wood and coatings etc. I still have one and it's beautiful!

Advertise it on a free site, they are in demand at allotment sites to build compost bins local to me.

I was thinking the same, people often want pallets.
Shouldn’t be hard to get rid of, it’s not as if it’s a body🤭
Where I live, anything left out front of a house vanishes in five minutes.

Sorry. Just realised I missed the post where he was cutting it up!

They are in great demand around here; there are so many things you can use them for! I'm sure it would find a good home... I know it's a bit late for you though OP, as your husband has already started taking it apart!

Mine went on Freecycle and went straight away (well, the next weekend).

Yep- my son picks them up all the time for the fence on his allotment. There is no end to what you can do with a discarded pallet...

My OH made a garden bar from pallets for our next door neighbour. It’s on wheels so can be moved around.

Jane43 just realised your DH was using a circular saw, not a chain saw. I now quite understand your concerns.

Funny how sometimes we read what we expect to read and not what a word actually says!

Do you have a neighbour with a fire or wood stove ?. My neighbour uses pallet wood almost exclusively on his fire. And it makes good kindling .

Desdemona Fri 14-Jun-24 13:58:38

If you can put it outside your front gate with a note on it saying it is free to take as Salti said, it might just disappear without any further effort needed.

Or put it on a local free site as others have said - pallets are very popular.

M0nica Fri 14-Jun-24 13:57:24

I might add that DH is on blood thinners and continues to use his chain saw to prune trees, and cut up pallets for firewood.

There is no real reason why anyone should cut themselves using a chain saw unless they are exceptionally careless or stupid.

M0nica Fri 14-Jun-24 13:55:40

freegle/Freecycle it.

I'm sure putting it in public view with a "Free" sign on it will find it a home very quickly.

Jane43 Fri 14-Jun-24 12:16:11

It is plain wood, not painted. I will try FaceBook and FreeCycle thanks to those who suggested that. Thankfully the rain is deterring him from going outside and attempting to saw it up.

Casdon Fri 14-Jun-24 12:06:37

Is it a blue painted pallet, or plain wood? I know you have to be careful with blue pallets because they are treated with chemicals, and you shouldn’t burn them or reuse them for garden projects etc. I had some garden mulch delivered on a blue pallet, and my friend took it to the tip for me on his pickup in the end because that seemed the only option.
