I have received yet another letter from our energy supplier saying that they need to fit a new meter. I really don't want a smart meter. What can I do?

Refuse, like I always do.

Ignore it.

Yup, ignore it. Ours keep trying too, but it’s not compulsory and we don’t want one.

change to Octopus.
i was plagued like this by e-on; no trouble at all since i became an Octopus, wish i'd done it sooner.

Why? What’s wrong with smart meters ? Please tell me. I have one .

we are the same...we were told that our metre had come to the end of it's days...but we still refused a smart metre, I read my metre and send off the readings...pay the bills on time....it's not compulsory...

There are so many reports of faults with them CrazyH, and as far as the energy company is concerned the meter is always right.

I just block their number and delete the emails. I'm perfectly capable of reading my own meter each month.. and deciding how much my DD should be..

When smart meters are discussed here, there’s always quite a difference of opinion.
I’ve had one for a few years now and the App from Octopus. It sends my daily usage direct to them, which is also shown on the App - daily, weekly, monthly and even annually. Whilst my outdoor meters are easily accessible, I don’t need to bother with them.
I’ve known people have issues with old meters, as well as with smart ones, so for me having the latter wasn’t a hard decision.

Almost 4 million smart meters in Britain are not working properly (March 2024).

You can simply ignore the letter.

No one is yet legally obliged to have one, but the supplier will keep pushing you to have one installed.

I have told my energy supplier that I don't want one and asked them to stop sending letters, emails and messages that usually begin with "Good news! Your smart meter is ready to be installed...".

They have ignored my request, so I ignore all their communications.

If you don't want a meter, bin the letter and ignore further 'offers'!

You can, of course, have a new non-Smart meter. Just tell them that’s what you want.

Given the hard sell tactics some energy firms use, I don't think I would trust them to fit a non-smrt meter if requested

Some people have had issues...we inherited ours when wemoved here ...never had a problem in 8 years...pay for exactly what we use every month ....I wouldn't go back

I understand that in some places the phone reception is not good enough for them to work properly. Maybe not in cities, but we don’t yet all live in cities. smile
