Cutlery 🍴

My parents spent a lot on buying us a canteen for a wedding present. It eventually looked so old fashioned that it was embarrassing and we didn't use it for the last 25 years so donated it and bought something a bit more with it.

I bought some lovely looking, supposedly stainless steel, cutlery from a well known online marketing site. Very cheap but looked expensive. After a few runs in the dishwasher, rust set in, particularly on the knives.

I now have a lovely Villeroy and Boch set. (my loo is V&B too)

I had H Housley & sons cutlery when I got married, which went the way of all the Sheffield steel manufacturers unfortunately. However, I could never find anything modern I liked as much, so I searched online, and found a company called Cutlery Search. They were excellent, and still stock it, so over the years I’ve added what I needed. Even though my original set has been in use for nearly forty years, it’s still in excellent condition.

Another vote for Robert Welch. If you are able to get to the shop in Chipping Campden all the different designs are on display so you can decide which feels best in your hands.
I inherited a lot of his from my parents and then bought more. Sadly, although still designed in Campden they are no longer made in the UK (I don't think any cutlery is!)

IKEA have an excellent range, it varies in price but is decent quality.
The best quality and value is Procook, they have a design that’s very “ George Jensen “ .

My mother always bought every newly engaged couple - and latterly when a couple set up home n the family a canteen of cutlery for 12 places, plus stuff like serving sets, carving etc.

So our entire family have never wanted for loads of cutlery😄😄

Now she has died, I am wondering if I should take it on😬

There is different quality of the same designs, so for best 18/10 is the one to go for.
The design will be personal taste, but there are lots of different ones from modern to traditional and everything in between. There are loads of different designers - again a matter of taste and purse.

I've got some really old knives that have gone black!! probably shouldn't have gone in the dishwasher.

We bought Viners. Still going strong (apart from a few lost teaspoons) almost fifty years later.

IKEA is good as well.

Can anyone explain why our cutlery comes out of the dishwasher marked ?
It's a slightly bluish tinged bloom, the knives get it worst.
Rubbing with white vinegar resolves the issue, but I can't be doing that every time.
We keep the salt and rinse aid topped up.

I’ve noticed that canteens of quality cutlery are often good buys in the sales.

Home sense always has high end cutlery in for very reasonable prices

We bought a lovely set from Marks and Spencer.

Dunelm has a good range. Sainsbury's and Tesco have reasonable kitchenware. Ikea is probably the cheapest.

Stainless steel, the simpler the better for me.
We ditched fish knives and forks along with the grapefruit spoons long ago and now have simple all purpose cutlery. We emptied the cutlery drawer and started again so finally have enough matching sets for family gatherings!

‘Viners everyday’ was our choice in the end.

Have a look on Lakeland website, that’s were I got my everyday cutlery from about 14 years ago.
