When we narried, Oneida cutlery was on our wedding list - six of different things - and in the years following we bought even more. 54 years on and it is never used cos we don't have formal dinners any more. The everyday "set" consists of about ten different designs!!!

Can't you retire the old "set" and enjoy your nicer cutlery everyday now?

I have retired my "set" like yours and it's actually rather lovely to have everything matching for a change!

I bought two everyday sets of four place settings from Woolworths nearly twenty years ago. It's still going strong.

By contrast I have a canteen of cutlery that my parents put together as a present for me. The canteen itself was made by my dad from wood he had saved from an old wardrobe. Its beautifully put together and french polished. Inside the compartments are slightly irregular in size which means when the lid is closed some of the knives fall out of their compartments! It's lined with adhesive green flock paper which I suspect is from a model shop.
The cutlery my mum collected from the supermarket. Prior to loyalty cards you will remember the supermarkets had offers on household items where having spent so much entitled you to purchase parts of say a dinner service or saucepan set.

The set as a whole is hideous, and I never use it. But I will never part with it because it was made with love, affection and thoughtfulness from my parents who hardly had any spare money. It is very sentimental.

Happy to recommend Robert Welch’s Ammonite cutlery. It is stainless steel and beautiful. I love it.

Be careful about Lakeland. We bought Viners. I think, and because they were in a box didn't realise how huge they were. They were fine for DH but I have tiny hands (not so much the rest of me) but I found them really huge and heavy to handle. The tiny hands example is I've just found the perfect pair of gardening gloves from the child's section in Klondyke age 6-8. I think we should have looked at the loose boxes first but hindsight is a great thing. Just to say I'm a huge Lakeland fan and have bought from them from the last 30 years. Definitely our/my mistake rather than theirs.

If it's just for everyday try Dunelm, the sell Viners as well as own non branded. If it's for the special dining event Robert Welch is a step up. Had a full canteen of the stuff, never used, packed it when going to visit DS. He and DIL were delighted.

Another vote for Robert Welsh! and cheap cutlery does not always stand the test of time.

I still use my Viners 'Chelsea' after 40 odd years its as good as new. I don't have a dishwasher though. Good quality cutlery should never go out of fashion.

We use our 60 yr old dishwasher safe Viners - good as new.

We've a canteen of Viners silver - dining table is lovely.

I didn't realise cutlery is such a "thing" before today.

I bought a set of Viners make recently online I shouldn't have bothered, it's still In the box, why is cutlery so big and cumbersome these days, the width of the forks seem twice as big as my old set. Unfortunately the set I was given as either a wedding or engagement gift, I only have one fork left ( which is the one I use) a few knives . My DH uses one from another set. I have " good" set for when we have visitors.
If you have a preference for the size and weight I would not order online but try to see it, although this isn't easy as they all seem packaged up these days.

Why, when they are labelled 'stainless steel' and 'Dishwasher safe' do my steak knives/forks sometimes come out of dishwasher rust marked??🤨

I have just returned from Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village with a beautiful set of Sophie Conran cutlery . Six place settings including tea spoons, dessert spoons , tea spoons, 2 different knives and 2 different forks plus 2 serving spoons . All for £99 instead of nearly £300.

Our cutlery is a muddle, you could find a few matching sets if you tried, but as long as it functions - knives cut, forks pierce food, we’re not bothered, friends and family come to eat and see us.

I always want a set with a dessert fork too. I hate trying to chase a bit of pudding around in a dish without a fork! They never seem to provide dessert forks on any of the cooking programmes either.
Maybe I am just showing my age.

Well that’s whatI think, in fact I’d love some old fashioned cutlery, the quality of nearly everything has gone downhill over the years.
We have the fancy Viners for best 😄and Dunelm Bead design for everyday and to go in the dishwasher.

Totally agree with Robert Welch. My daughter lives near chipping Campden the shop is really worth a visit ( so is chipping Campden)

It’s a shame that, apart from a few remaining “little mesters” there are so few major Sheffield cutlers left now; less than a handful, but still prestigious. Viners, yes; Arthur Price, Carrs - and Granton knives are still made here. I had one of their ham knives given to me as a wedding present fifty eight years ago and it has been in almost constant use. About five years ago the original bone handle gave in to age and I was able to send it back to the factory to have it re-handled (not in bone these days). It will be good for another fifty eight years, even if I won’t be!

This is an amazing coincidence because I have just ditched my old set of Eternal beau cutlery and bought new stainless steel set just plain but looks classy from Home Bargains. Very like Arthur Price design.
It must be telepathy among the grans !!

I am looking for some reasonably priced cutlery where the forks arent "rough" most of the ones I see they are. Or maybe it's me?? haha
