Is it time to buy a new bed?

I would chuck out an old bed base with drawers, especially if it has been somewhere damp. It would be the ideal haven for bed bugs, silver fish, carpet beetles, moths etc.

I have a four drawer base but it gets vacuumed out regularly, all the drawers and the fabric. I leave little lavender sachets in the drawers with throws, spare pillows etc as most creepy crawlies don’t like it. My mattress is extra deep and is about a year old.

You would have to bring bed bugs home with you, surely?

Hmmm.....checked out where John Lewis is in Cardiff and it's pretty central. I've only been to Cardiff 2-3 times since I moved here and wasnt shopping then....

Will bear that in mind as a possibility....

There’s a really good bed section in John Lewis in Cardiff, I got my last mattress there. It’s the largest John Lewis branch in the UK outside London in fact, it’s a shoppers heaven.

We have a Tempur bed frame and mattress and the bed frame is an ottoman style. There is no gas cylinder you just lift it up manually and it is quite heavy. Neither of us will lift it if the other one isn’t there as we see the potential for a nasty accident.

Regarding the otterman style beds, Just today I read about a lady (late 30s) who was killed when the bed collapsed on her. Apparently a gas cylinder which lowers it was faulty and she was kneeling down looking into the space below. It crashed down and pinned her down by the neck and she died from asphyxiation. Sadly her young daughter found her dead.
Who would ever think that this could happen?

We recently bought a bed from Furniture Village, there was lots of choice, almost too much and you could choose how many drawers to have, we chose two at the bottom, we could have had four drawers or a lift up ottoman style which was a bit extra. They offer interest free credit if needed. The main problem was disposing of the old one but our son helped my husband to take it down to the garage and we gave it away through Freecycle to somebody who was very grateful to take it. I have since learnt from a friend that if you go to Dreams they have a system with cameras which can identify your pressure points and recommend the best mattress. An added bonus is that they take the old bed away. We will soon be needing a new bed in another bedroom so we will go to Dreams.

Just checking out Hypnos beds online - and thinking at first glance they look a bit like Myers beds and wondering if it's Myers renamed? They look about the price range I'm expecting.

Thinks - of to check where the nearest John Lewis store is to me these days - and willing to bet that means Cardiff.....(ie some distance from me - but I suspect it might be the only John Lewis in Wales.....well fingers crossed there is a John Lewis there......). I do live very remotely these days.....

Our bed, not a divan, is well over 35 years old, my son was born on it, it’s not going anywhere.

Good Myers beds go on for ever!

We have a new one, a Hypnos, but it's very heavy to manoeuvre.

If the base is still sound, I’d just get a new mattress.

My bed isn't a divan bed, but a stand alone bed which will last forever. It is probably over a hundred years old. I think with divans it depends on the quality of the base, but not something I know much about.
The maxim I was told was that buy a cheap bed, but an expensive mattress because the other way round isn't a good idea.
Mattresses should be changed about every eight years or so.

My bed is maybe 40 years old .
It was extremely expensive at the time.
It's comfortable.
I'd consider a mattress topper , but not replacing it .

Thanks Lisangell10 - I've been googling away and, at first glance, it looks like Myers are still going - as there are pretty recent google entries. But they do seem to have shut pretty recently - darn it! Maybe they are a Lockdown victim?

I've been checking out various bedshops too - and none of them stocking them. I think they must have shut pretty recently. So guess I'm just going to have to head into what bedshops there are around me and tell them what my current bed is like and that I'm after equivalent.

Next point after that being that they do the full job - hadnt occurred to me that a firm might try not to do the full bed replacement job (ie take away old bed, make up new bed, etc) - as of course they obviously should (but I started wondering when one relatively local bed shop put up comments that they do these things - as a rather "fanfare" type announcement that made me wonder if some of their rivals don't do a full job of helping the customer replace their bed).

Going to a nearby town that has a bed shop next month - so will start by checking them out whilst I'm there. I know they aren't cheap #cough...so imagine they're reasonable quality.

I have forgotten the make right now and it is underneath all the bedding and two mattress protectors! Most mattresses now have a built in topper, seems to be a trend. I don’t like that you can’t turn the whole mattress now, only turn it horizontally.

Not sure about Myers but we used to have a Myers mattress and it was so comfy.

What make of mattress have you got Liaaangel10? Life would be easier if Myers beds were still around - but I don't believe they are. So I do remember buying it was a case of trying out a whole large room full of beds and thinking "Ooh this is so comfortable" when I got to the Myers bed (think?? it's a bit softer type of mattress) and it was mid-price range and so I bought that one.

I've wondered about that option Sparklefizz - though I could manage with a different drawer set-up too.

Guess I'm inclining towards the "whole kit and caboodle" - because there will have been wear and tear on the base as well. Also there's the fact that I know I used this bed for years back in my last house and it was a typical Victorian terrace house (ie damp - as I gather they often are). Not walls running with water sorta damp - but I did have a built-in wardrobe wall my father had made for me and I often had to remove perfectly clean clothes from it and wash them again - as they'd started to get mould on them. That house was a bit like that - but at least my current house doesn't have a damp problem (a noticeable amount of other problems - but at least it's dry.....). So I'm inclined to chuck out a bed base I've used in a damp house...

I couldn't find a bed that gave me the 4-drawers underneath that I was used to, so in the end I just bought a new mattress.
