How to Store an Onion

I prefer fresh whole onions to frozen ones and big onions are easier to cut, but I never found out a successful way to store cut-into onions. Please advise if you can.

If I have half an onion left I simply wrap in cling film and pop in the fridge. It's never there for long !

Same here. Wrapped well and put in bottom of fridge.

Yep- use half an onion and put the other cut side down in a small tupperware. Works well for me.

Chop all of it (hardly takes longer than chopping half, once it is peeled and topped and tailed) Use half and put the second half into a small "snack-sized" poly bag in the fridge or freezer. When next needed you don't need to get your hands smelly chopping it, and there isn't even a container to wash.

I put the left over onion (not chopped) in a plastic box and store in the fridge.

I’ve got an ancient version of something like this. I’ve had it for donkeys years, no idea where I bought it. It doesn’t have clips but it works perfectly well. It goes in the dw and has never picked up the smell of onions.

Mum always used to say you should never store a cut onion in the fridge - primarily I believe because everything especially milk can get tainted with the smell. This does not happen, however, if you seal it in cling wrap as others have suggested, and as I do myself.

Or store it in a plastic box with a lid........I'm not keen on cling film!

I found that whatever I used to store onion in the fridge, there was always some smell. I came across a storage solution when browsing Temu, didn't expect much but it actually works brilliantly. It's a large onion shaped receptacle, looks like a large red onion. It was £1.29.

Like SueDonim we have a small plastic onion "box". Kept in the veg box of fridge, a half onion lasts a while

Thanks all! I will try a small tupperware box and also send away for that wee onion shaped box.

I will try an 'onion dome' box
Thanks all!

We grow our onions. I peel and chop many, freeze in a bag.

I just put the remaining half or quarter of a big onion, unwrapped, in the salad drawer. Always fine, it won’t be there for long.
The bottom of my salad drawer is always lined with a tea towel, changed weekly (or when I remember!) to help mop up the inevitable damp that certainly contributes to contents deteriorating.
