Tethered bottle tops

I really don't like these bottle tops that are attached. Mine flicked pomegranate juice around today. I think it is a new EU law but surely we are not in the EU.

Has anyone else been following the series Buried ( file on 4)
Our whole waste disposal industry has been corrupted, together with many council officials.
One episode told us that 99% of waste disposal companies are connected to organised crime.
They stated that the environment agencies have given up.
One of the team fitted a tracker to plastic bottle to what h where it went: it was burnt in Denmark. This was from Manchester.
It was stated ( I don’t know if it was in the episode linked) but the industry is rife with employing undocumented migrants.

This is truly shocking petra. Shows how it makes a complete mockery of us individuals all ‘doing our bit’ for the environment doesn’t it? Or so we think.

I hate them too. I always cut them off. I dont see the point of them.

Kim19 Tue 05-Nov-24 19:01:18

Another 'just twist them off' here.

So why has Persil changed from attached bottle tops to screw-on ones?

Sorry. I don’t know the answer.
I use Ariel.

I just googled it and realised the ring can be useful for attaching the bottle to your bag or key ring or whatever, you live and learn, yes but I hate it too and always cut it off immediately

Personally I really dont like them. I have arthritic fingers so i struggle to get tops off and on. If i open a bottle of carbonated water no longer does it stay fizzy due to these caps.

Etoile2701 Tue 05-Nov-24 16:07:14

I can't stand them.

It’s not simple for people with arthritic or painful hands though.

Exactly. Some people get very smug on threads like this. Not everyone finds it easy to open these bottles - my friend has very bad arthritis in her hands and she finds them a nightmare. And if they contain something which you have to shake, as soon as you open the top, they drip everywhere.

I hate these new bottle tops they leak.

Wow, patronising much?

Not at all, perfect common sense. Totally agree Stella. No wonder the environment is in such a mess!

It is perfectly possible to be concerned and do your bit for the environment, while still finding these bottle tops a nuisance. I do everything I can to recycle as much as I can and I never drop little, nor does anyone else in my family. I'm pretty sure most people now they were introduced for environmental reasons.

Visgir1 Tue 05-Nov-24 15:36:48

I just thought it was an Environmental thing nothing directly to do with the EU?
I'm okay with them now, push them down to lock.

SillyNanny321 Tue 05-Nov-24 15:33:49

My Goats Milk comes in cartons with these tops on. I have bad arthritis in my hands & find it very hard to get the tops screwed down tight enough. Last time I had a fight with one milk ended up all over the fridge & the kitchen floor!
Ok good for the environment but not good for my fingers!

Mollygo Tue 05-Nov-24 15:30:10

I’ve only come across them on fruit juice cartons and bottled water. My first encounter with one in the carton was disastrous, and like others on here, that first time, I cut the tether.

Once I’d worked out what to do, I don’t mind them.

I really don’t mind them, you just have to position the bottle top opposite to where you want to pour the liquid, plus it saves me having to chase the lid round the kitchen floor which is where the lose ones always end up when my arthritic fingers drop them

Those of you who find them annoying, do you realise that they have been changed to attached tops to protect wildlife. I think the lives of animals and birds are more important than a little mild inconvenience!

madalene Tue 05-Nov-24 14:25:43

I find them very difficult to use too. Even when you snap the lid back on it still needs to be screwed too in order to get a tight seal. They’re very fiddly, difficult for older people, children, and those with any condition or disability of hands, fingers or arms.
I don’t know if it’s because of an EU ruling but if it is, we still have thousands of EU rules and regulations that have never been taken out of UK law.

I find that they often don't go on again fully and just pushing them on is no use if you need shake a bottle of orange juice for example. My breakfast orange juice has often ended up splashed around the kitchen. For me the only answer is to cut the tether.

mokryna Tue 05-Nov-24 12:40:11

Forget EU recycle standards and think of wildlife trying to swallow their new found food.
Other than that, bend the lid back till it clicks, once done the lid is easy to use the next time.

Granarchist Mon 04-Nov-24 20:44:38

snap them back and they are fine - then just pop back on

Granmarderby10 Mon 04-Nov-24 19:51:55

Me too Whethertomorrow I have begun to notice that packaging on all sorts of everyday products is becoming more flimsy or else brittle eg. plastic milk containers that now implode or bend when being poured.
Another is sharp crimped ends on tubes of stuff and just recently an unfortunate incident with Birds custard powder tub: please go back the tin 🙏🏻
