Sheltered accommodation

I think you may miss tending the garden - is there an area you can "tinker" in?

I haven't done this but a dear friend of my mother's did it years ago and was very happy. She loved the fact that there was always someone to chat to in the communal areas if she wanted to but could still close her own door and have peace and quiet.

I think the move may give you a new lease of life.

After my wife died I kept my 4 bed house for a year.I decided there was no point in keeping it so moved to a one bed retirement flat in a small city.3years in I am so glad that I did it.I am quite a fit male and now have a good sized travel pot for holidays and love city centre living.My fees and ground rent come to about £3,000 a year,but when you consider that I don't pay water or insurance and have free use of washing and drying facilities and free city centre car parking,with no repairs to worry about I think that I am on a winner.Don't miss doing my garden either as the development has lovely well maintained gardens.

My mum was very happy for many years. When she moved in everyone was a similar age, some problems later when the age range was 55 to 95 but basically all good

My Dad moved into a sheltered one bed apartment aged 85 the year after my Mum died. We were concerned that he would regret giving up the family home of over 50 years. But he was adamant that’s what he wanted to do as he was heartbroken there without my Mum.

He settled in really well and had 5 happy years there. It was just the right balance of attending communal activities if he felt like it and retreating to his apartment if he didn’t feel like socialising.

His neighbour on the same landing had been a keen gardener in her previous home. She continued her hobby by decorating the windowsills in communal areas with lovely potted plants which were admired by all.
