I recently bought a new bed with an expensive Tempur mattress .
I went for the medium as I don't want it too soft but it's still too hard and giving me pain .
I suffer with fibromyalgia and arthritis and am looking for a mattress topper I can sink into .
Any recommendations appreciated .

Take a look at the Dusk.com ones. They do a Luxury Duck Feather & Down Mattress Topper, which we have on our guest bed, and also a Supreme Goose Down Mattress Topper, which we have on our own bed. Both are very good, and they're both currently at a massive reduction in the Black Friday Sale!

I have a Devon Wool mattress topper. It cost about £100 eight years ago for the King size. Recently I bought a new mattress which is softer than the previous one. I still use the mattress topper it's so comfortable. My bed is like a cloud.

I have a Dormeo Octaspring zoned topper, which is very comfortable for my OA and RA. They do different densities.

I've had several mattress toppers and haven't been truly satisfied with any of them. I think putting a thin topper over an unsuitable mattress isn't going to help much. The original mattress should work all by itself. But how do we decide which mattress is going to work for us? Aye, there's the rub.

I once bought a very expensive orthopaedic mattress as I have back problems. I spent a very tedious afternoon in a specialist shop talking to a specialist sales person before deciding on which mattress to buy.

After my first night on it I felt as though I had slept in the middle of the road and not only my back ached, I had aches where I had never had them before.

I ended up using a thick duvet as a mattress topper and buying extra deep fitted sheets. It sort of worked but was not ideal.

I have a Panda memory foam topper, we bought it for our camper van as sleeping just on the upholstery was too hard.

Mine is from the White Company and it has made an expensive medium mattress much softer and I sink into it.

I bought mine from Dunelm a few years ago. It was expensive at the time but well worth it. Although my bed is double, I am on my own, so I bought a single that does not move.

Do you mind me asking if you use an electric blanket, please? I could be tempted to get a wool topper (the last one I had was quilted and the filling bunched until it was like lying on rocks) but I like an electric blanket in the winter, and prefer it to be under a topper than just under a sheet. Obviously I still want to feel the heat, though. Do you think a wool one would be suitable for that?

Osteopaths usually say that it's a good idea to have an Orthopaedic mattress, before and as long as you don't have any problems with your back or pain in your spine. If that's the case, they are simply too hard and you won't be comfortable enough to have a decent night's sleep.

I've experienced a 'slept in the road' feeling in a couple of hotels and it's awful. Comments here show that you can put right the problem with your mattress by having a good quality topper and you don't need to wake up feeling like Quasimodo. Duvets are only good for emergency topping, I've found.

Doesn’t Tempur come with a 100 night return policy?

Would you consider returning it and getting a different mattress altogether?

Thank you everyone for your replies. I bought a memory foam topper from Amazon in the sales .
I now sink into bed and it was a bargain.
I use an electric overblanket and put it between a top sheet and the duvet and haven't had any problems ,plus you don't feel the wires like you do with an under blanket.

I too have fibromyalgia and found my mattress quite uncomfortable. I bought the Dorma Tencel Blend Memory Foam topper from Dunhelm in 2023. I am very happy with it. One downside to be aware of is that it’s quite a thick one and I have had to change my fitted sheets for the deeper 38cm ones.
