Variable or Fixed? Gas and Electricity

I am with Octopus Energy and I am on a variable tariff and I pay on a variable direct debit, paying only for what I use each month. I prefer it that way, keeping my money in my account than in the energy company's account. I was wondering if you have continued on a variable tariff or if you have fixed? I do not have a smart meter. I have solar panels so that does help keep my costs down. Thanks a lot.

No solar panels here, so with Octopus and fixed. That means the tarrif (lower per unit this time) is fixed, but I can change the monthly payment up or down, should I choose to. I suspect they won’t let me reduce it to a ridiculously small figure, but I’m in considerable credit with them.

Had a smart meter for years - kept in the box in the garage. Of course, with the Octopus App, I don’t really need it.
