Washing a fleece dressing gown

I quick wash mine - a 14 minute cycle, but that spin is only at 800rpm. It dries in no time though, inside or out - tumble drier too.

Should add that I don’t wash it in its own - that could unbalance the machine, so I keep it until I’ve a load of similar items which just need a quick wash.

I was told by a friend, who was told this by a washing machine repair man! that you should never wash a single item on its own. Always stick a tea towel or something in to balance it up.

I wash fleece items very carefully so they don't turn to felt. It has worked so far.

Treat stains by hand first. Turn inside out. Put larger items in a net laundry bag to prevent too much rubbing together. Use a wool cycle, low temperature, and gentle wool washing agent. Don't set the spin too fast, but the wool cycle probably won't have that anhway.

Hang up to dry.

With careful treatment they will remain fluffy.

But don't buy any more fleece. It gives off microfibres which get into the water system. Apparently some newer washing machines have filters for this, but I'm not convinced they can catch everything.

DH was a fan of fleece, I am not, but I always washed his fleece jackets at 40 degrees centigrade with anything else to be washed at that temperature and on the short cycle to make up a load, as I never wash only one thing at a time - too expensive.

Everything came out looking perfect, or as perfect as when it went in, but clean as apposed to dirty.

I used to hang fleece clothes out on the line with everything else, and in the winter just hang then up in the wash-kitchen to dry. Never put any fleece in the tumble dryer.

Quite often a machine will dance across the floor simply because it's not balanced properly. A single large item can often cause this problem.

You could wash it with other fleece items if you have them, or with machine washable jumpers, socks, trousers etc. at 30. I would then give it a cool tumble to fluff it up, just for 10 or 15 minutes and hang on a hanger to finish drying. Like others, I never wash anything alone.

I'm with JackyB. Ever since the information was made public about the micro fibres from fleece that get into the waterways and cause harm to marine life, I have given fleece a very wide berth. Sorry.

My fleece items, including dressing gowns, just go in a short 30° wash along with most of my other clothing. I usually hang them up to dry. No problems observed.

I put my fleece in a big mesh bag, then wash on 40 quick wash- bag usually picks up the fluff- I try to go for cotton type zip cardigan now than fleece due the fibres entering the food chain.

When I wash my fleece dressing gown I pop a towel in the washing machine with it to balance the drum. Washing a solo item can cause damage to the drum bearings.

I wash my long fleece dressing gown (together with other items) on a very short 20 or 30 degree wash cycle, then dry in a low-temperature tumble-dryer cycle. The tumble dryer fluffs up the fibres as new. (A hot tumble dryer cycle could partly melt the fibres!) Best of all, dry outdoors on a lovely day with a nice breeze!

Washing out overnight. I never leave washing out overnight but when my daughter asked why, I had no reason! Afraid it will get ‘darked’ on!
