Thanks for the info, Old frill. I wasn’t aware of that.
Apologies, I think my response crossed with yours

Further to my post about the rescue helicopter, I have since learned that it, plus two rescue boats, were deployed in response to a report of a person missing at sea.
Sadly, the search has been called off this morning. Not looking forward to the , probably inevitable, outcome.

I found this, it says the search was called off, no swimmer was found.
I live overlooking the sea and we often have S&R helicopters and lifeboats out, often no-one is found as they either weren't needing rescuing or it was a false call out. The local RNLI boat crew always posts outcomes on the local Facebook page.

I live overlooking Dover harbour. Yesterday evening, I was somewhat disconcerted to see a rescue helicopter hovering just a few metres in front of my window! It was there for ages before moving to hover just outside the Eastern Dock. There were a couple of rescue boats in the harbour at this time, as well. When it got dark, they used searchlights for a while.
I found out this morning that a swimmer had been reported missing yesterday evening, but can find nothing to say what the outcome was. I hope they were safe.
