Housing. Landlords housing immigrants.

My friend lives next door to a rented house, three sharing. Said they are burning wood in a drum in the back garden until early hours of the morning, talking loudly & smoking weed.
Said it’s a nightmare. I Said to get on to the council & complain.

Yeah and I bet most of the people who took up right to buy were Labour voters...I know a couple who did even though it was against their Labour principles.

That’s discrimination too, against those who don’t have the council backing to pay excessive rent.

It’s a difficult equation though. If councils don’t offer private landlords money to house the homeless or migrants, who they are legally obliged to provide housing for, they will have to house them in council accommodation. Not all councils own properties for rent now, and those that do are under tremendous pressure to house the people who are on their waiting lists. What other alternative is there for councils?

They key word here should be homeless not immigrant.

What would the landlord do if a migrant family who could pay their own rent asked for the tenancy?

What is really happening is that councils are offering higher rent payments and other financial incentives to private landlords to secure housing for homeless or vulnerable individuals. That could be any family needing a home.

Thatcher’s Right to Buy has well and truly come home to roost with 40% of all council homes sold off now in the hands of private landlords. In Milton Keynes it’s 70%.

We have a property we rent out and prefer renting to locals. The neighbours are all very nice so I am always very careful to get suitable tenants.

No amount of money would tempt me to take in people who might not look after my property or annoy the neighbours in any way.

An aquaintance of mine had a home to rent at a fair rent. The local council offered her much more to house immigrants. She declied. Yet our council tax is set to rise by 12. 1/2% next year.

Out of interest, was it first advertised to the general public?

Our previous council ran a similar scheme - may still do, for all I know. It can certainly sound a good deal for LL’s but there are downsides such as having to sign up to a five year contract, during which you can’t sell the property. That may not suit everyone’s plans, if they might want to live in it themselves or a member of their family, or sell it to find their retirement in the near future.

Why did they refuse? Is it because there is a lack of housing in the area and they would prefer a local in the property? Or are they anti immigration? Or was it because they don't agree with the council offering over the odds? In theory I would have probably accepted, the money would have been guaranteed.
Councils have been forced by government to accept a certain amount of immigrants onto their housing list.
Back in the 50/60s when people rented out rooms they would put notices in windows saying " No Blacks or Irish" and a lot of the Windrush generation were turned away because of it . We are going back to being discriminated on because you are not the right colour or religion.
