But it can’t be right that Councils are deliberately pricing other tenants out of the market, with the knock on effect of pushing up rents in their area for people who are not bankrolled by the Council.
That’s discrimination too, against those who don’t have the council backing to pay excessive rent.
It’s a difficult equation though. If councils don’t offer private landlords money to house the homeless or migrants, who they are legally obliged to provide housing for, they will have to house them in council accommodation. Not all councils own properties for rent now, and those that do are under tremendous pressure to house the people who are on their waiting lists. What other alternative is there for councils?
