I've done it again!

I've just collected the washing from the basket upstairs, carried it downstairs and loaded the machine. Added detergent and conditioner. Selected the programme. Turned around and there it is ... the one sock that didn't make it. I grab it, turn back just as I hear the machine door lock. Please tell me I'm not the only one who does this.

Ha,ha,
I had to laugh,
I did it yesterday.
One bright pink sock.
I thought of your post.🌸

You are not the only one.

Could be worse. You could have left a black sock in the machine when emptying it, then put in a lights wash ...

HA HA HA!

WelshPoppy, I promise you, you're definitely not the only one, and socks are notorious for being singles!

Some time ago, I shoved all the washing in the machine, ...I'm single and live alone but it's amazing how I have to do 4 washes a week ...mostly leggins and t-shirts!... closed the door, opened the drawer for the powder, closed it, was just about to switch on the machine and realised I'd put a tea bag in the drawer instead of the powder, which was quickly taken out, binned, then the proper powder put in!

I gave up and made bean bag toys from our odd sock collection. And guess what - hey presto - the missing socks promptly turned up!

I was always struggling to pair up socks and then I discovered sockees I call them but Lakeland Plastics call them Sock Mates. I've trained my husband to put his socks into one of these every time he takes his socks off. No more losing socks nor having to match them up after washing!

I've got a fold-up basket so it's flat when not in use and saves a lot of storage space.

When I emptied the machine after a light coloured wash yesterday I was horrified to see a black sock ! Fortunately no harm done, so now I’m wondering why I bother to separate light and dark.
Oh and by the way, I rarely have unpaired socks.

Done that countless times it’s so annoying. I have also opened the washing machine when the programme has finished put the wash in the basket. Loaded it up again detergents and all pressed start button and realised I have just put the same washing back in. It’s always too late when I look at the empty wash basket!

My Samsung has a pause button and a little door that opens at a press so you can put missed items in without opening the main door. Samsung machines are Which recommended too.

KKKKATIE Fri 31-Oct-25 19:31:06

If that happens to me I switch off at the wall wait till the door unlocks put the missed item in close the door and switch back on at the wall and it carries on the cycle.

I always wash socks in the washing machine in a zipped open weave bag, Bras in a different one.

Nor, hopefully, when the water has filled the machine!!

(If a front loader anyway)

All the time.. And I have array of odd socks in airing cupboard too

My machine lets you add things anytime during its cycle. Didn’t think I would use this when I bought it but it’s amazing how many times I have. It’s a Samsung which usefully sends me a message when it finishes. Didn’t think I needed this either but…….

I also have a Samsung machine and love the fact that I can add an extra item any time. You just have to pause the cycle, pop open the little trapdoor within the large round door on the front, close it up and restart the machine. Sooo handy, It's meant to be for small things like socks but I've managed to cram the odd hand towel in when I forgot it.

My latest is losing the stray sock. I live on my own and not even an animal to blame.

That’s strange. Since I started living alone I haven’t mislaid any odd socks. When I moved I brought my odd socks with me in the forlorn hope that their partners would turn up, but they didn’t.

Socks definitely have a mind of their own. They can be very naughty, play games, disappear for days, months and years or even leave home for good.

Ah ha

😁

When the DC were still at home, we had a large spare sock bag in the airing cupboard. For some reason their other halves must have left home because they never turned up and the lonely odd socks got thrown out in the end.

Our Bosch machine also has a function where you can stop the machine and open the door, provided the water level is low enough. It's invaluable!

If I switch my Bosch off quickly before water starts it will allow door to open after 3 mins. Yes, it's socks, usually my GDs.

Foxyferret Fri 31-Oct-25 15:01:26

This sounds daft but before loading I count the socks to make sure I have an even number. If odd, I retrace my steps and usually find it lying on the stairs.

HobbyCat Fri 31-Oct-25 14:49:05

Turn the machine off at the plug. Wait for a minute or two and the door will unlock. I do this all the time.

DizzyDenise Fri 31-Oct-25 14:45:23

Do as another lady suggested, press pause, turn it off at the mains and wait - it may take a few minutes. However, be careful if the water level was high enough to prevent the door from opening if you pressed pause before but it didn't open, when you open the door to add the escapee!

Pomgirl Fri 31-Oct-25 14:40:12

Your not..but i dont care lol..
Just stick it back in the linen bin ...
