We have wooden slatted beds for us and in the guest room. Ours is nearly 40 years old - was a very good make & is still fine. (Just needed the occasional repair with wood-glue where slats have slipped.) Mattresses have been replaced but the wooden frames go on! We can put storage boxes/bags underneath the beds - this is very useful indeed.

Same here. We replace our mattresses (2 European singles on a European king size bed) as soon as we feel uncomfortable. IKEA are good and not expensive. We also have a single duvet each. Well, not a duvet as such, electric over blankets. Not easy to get in the duvet covers though!

hit or miss not hut or miss

Have had wooden slatted and divan and definitely prefer divan. A divan gives much better support to the mattress and will sustain a mattress much longer than slatted. Looked for a new mattress just under a year ago not knowing uf I woukd needca ew base too and was told twice in local bedcstores that a good divan base will last for 3 mattresses whilst slatted is hut or miss for two. Average life of a mattress being 8 years. Good luck, not an easy decision, took me a good month.

My DHs physio recommends hypnos mattresses so we have onecshe also said get one as firm as you can . Advantage is they're British too . We have a slatted base as well . I also like the air to circulate .

Hugely expensive but worth every penny is our Tempa mattress. What it sits on doesn't matter!

I’m sleeping in a wooden slatted bed that’s over 40 years old. Have had several mattresses over the years. I don’t like the chunky look of divans. I use plastic storage boxes underneath for spare bedding. If I need to replace the bed, I would make sure I got a wooden bed made in England, no Chinese rubbish.

I bought a nice silver metalic bed for my daughter..However..I upgraded the matress..that is important...We spend a lot of time in bed..so orthapedic is good...firm...good for your back.

Divan bed with drawers is definitely the way to go.

I have a memory foam mattress topper on mine, but I may replace the mattress with a memory foam one.

I would be lost without the storage underneath.

I also have a divan with 4 drawers. Very handy. Silentnight.

Plus they are so easy to move around as the base has wheels.

Although this might be just as expensive as the whole bed.
If you know the name of your mattress you can look it up. (We have a solid drawer/divan base but have replaced the mattress twice.
Just remember that it has become more comfortable over the years and will be firmer than your current bed

I would advise very stongly against ant bed that has to be folded away!

Do you really want the hassle of folding it away in the morning, after the room has been aired, and getting it down again in the evening every single day?

And the same applies to a divan.

Both are fine in a guest bedroom, especially if it doubles as your office, sewing-room or whatever, but honestly when you are feeling wretched with a migraine or the flu you do not want to be fiddling around with your bed. You just want to lie down quickly.

We had a slatted bed. The slats started to creak and cracked and I hated vacuuming underneath.
We replaced it with a King size 4 drawer divan which is 2 single beds zipped together. It is fabulous. Extra storage, can't see underneath so don't worry about the dust and the 2 single mattresses are easy to flip or turn regularly. If needed we can have twin beds.
Go to a showroom and try them all.

I have a basic ottoman bed from John Lewis, but a very expensive mattress and topper. I chose the mattress after sleeping on a friend's guest bed and having the best sleep ever! She told me the make and I ordered one immediately. Another tip is to sneak a look at the mattress brand if you stay in a hotel, bnb or air bnb ... I've slept on some beauties!!!

For a mattress with super comfort I recommend a Latex one. I first came across them in Malaysia and found them to be the best I had ever had. My current mattress is an expensive spring one but with a Latex topper and the mix is excellent. The toppers are much cheaper than a full mattress. I first tried a memory foam topper but it was far to hot for me and made me sweat. I ended up giving it away.

A bed only has to do a pretty simple job - hold the mattress a couple of feet above the floor. Seems silly not to have storage space underneath.
But you can replace your slat supports.

I have a divan, I wouldn’t have anything else. I just periodically change the mattress….

You can buy replacement slats and holders.
No need to buy a new bed.

I really don’t like divans and would choose a bed where it is easy to clean underneath. We’ll need to replace ours soon, so I’ll be following your thread Calendargirl.
