Sofa bed.

I'm looking for a sofa bed, to sleep two, for when family visit. I've never had one or slept on one so not sure what to choose. What should I look out for, and does a comfortable one exist? We've just downsized to a 2 bedroom bungalow and would like the second bedroom to double up as an office/useable room, rather than look like a bedroom.

Sorry I meant DFS not DHS (earlier post!) but I thought the guarantee was ten years? Either way I have had two very good sofas from there. One is over 20 years old and still going strong, though it isn't a sofa bed.

Yes DFS are very good, my sofa bed (produced to order)was £1000 but very well made, and comfy. Its only £20 a month over 4years but is INTEREST FREE for four years,so not paying any more than sofa cost.(might charge a small delivery fee, depends where you are i think🤔

DFS- can be expensive but have 15yr gaurantee. In fact my oldest son now has my 'old' one which is only about 8yrs old,so its still going strong and i use it when i stay at his.Everyone said its comfy, and i replaced tbat with a slightly smaller one from DFS as well, as my house is now smaller.

I used to have one from Ikea in my spare room which was fine for occasional guests. However when I visited my friend her sofa bed was from DFS and was much superior and still not hugely expensive. Our family have bought a lot of sofas from DFS over the years and find the service and value for money very good and you can buy on interest free credit if you wish.

I rather liked the pull down desk idea as you can put a normal mattress www.wallbeds.co.uk/solutions/complete-systems-furniture-mechanisms/happy-table-double-wall-bed-system but they see very expensive.
My parents had the three foam cubes folded, which are OK for younger folks, and family.
I have slept on the sofas that you just pull the seat and it flattens out ( www.wayfair.co.uk/furniture/pdp/george-oliver-chapelle-burnt-orange-linen-sofa-bed-u110604850.html) they tend to be very firm
but think about where you will store the bed linen

I have one very similar to this in dark green velvet. It is comfortable both as a bed and as a sofa , some aren’t .

Reminds me of my aunt taking me to stay with her and my cousin in a holiday flat
One double bed and a chair that opened out to a single bed ,
I got onto it very gingerly and it started to fold up !
Cousin and Aunt so convulsed with laughter that they extracted me with difficulty , I was 10 years old and refused to get back on it !

Have you thought about getting a 'Murphy' bed? There are quite a range available these days. For example this one comes in at £639 ]], but then you have to buy the mattress on top, however you'll likely spend the same sort of money for a good sofa bed.

Slight problem with them .....there has been at least one incident of a bed like that killing the owner (by accident) - as they got caught up in the mechanism and whoops.....

I wouldnt dream of having any sort of ottoman bed as a gift personally....

Check the width of the mattress as they can be narrower than expected. I looked for a 4’6” mattress as most were 4’, and eventually found one , it’s reasonably comfy but sadly hardly been used.

I echo that re checking the width of mattress. I've got a chairbed, sofabed and sofa - all from Sofa Workshop. But the chairbed mattress is only 2'6" in the event.

Just checked whether that firm still exists - as apart from my measuring mistake with the chairbed =their furniture has all turned out to be normal quality (ie what most people call "good quality"). So - if anyone tells you there is a successor firm of equivalent quality = worth a look at. They were not a cheap firm and my sofabed (bought 2013 or 2014) cost £2,500 then. But, as I said, if you can find an equivalent firm then do so - as all 3 items are still fine.

Trixi I bought one for the same reasons as your wish list, I bought from Loaf, it’s really comfy 🌷

We had an expensive one from Joh Lewis. It had a proper mattress, not a foam one, and is 5ft wide. When we have visited DIL we have been put on a cheap foam sofa bed, it is absolutely awful, only 4ft wide with a lump where the base folds!

Agree completely. We had that experience.
The John Lewis one we bought for mum and which I now have is a really comfy settee I'm sitting on it now and a good wide bed with it's own separate sprung mattress. It cost a lot but if you can afford it, it's worth it.

I shall take it when I move to my next house.

Ours is from Furniture village i think. It has a metal fold out bed frame and us supposedly for regular rather than occasional use. It is easy to pull out and the duvet can be folded away inside it.
The only draw back is it is it is quite hard/furm to sit on.

mokryna Sat 21-Feb-26 18:20:37

It’s the mattress that counts, do not buy the regular one sold with the sofa go for a better quality one.

I have a click clack sofa bed and use a topper to make it more comfortable . Grandson (16) says it’s really comfortable

John Lewis LINEAR…Excellent as a bed or a sofa

rowyn Sat 21-Feb-26 14:03:47

I@ve had a sofa bed for years to the extent that I can't remember where I bought it from. It sits in a smallish room that leads onto the garden but which can be used ( and is) as a spare bedroom for visitors. It's quite compact but very comfortable for 2 people sitting or sleeping on it.
It's hard to explain how it unfolds - I just sort of pull out the seat bit. It has no protruding bits so it takes up very little room and is placed by the wall with a radiator behind it.
I know its not helpful that I can't say where I bought it, but just be aware that simple ones like mine must be available.

keepingquiet Sat 21-Feb-26 13:55:54

Mine is from DHS and is very comfy. I've even slept on it myself! Guests always remark how comfy it is and every easy to put up and put away.

However, after 8 years it isn't wearing well as a sofa, which I use all the time.

I am now thinking of getting a new sofa- but would buy from DHS again.

I slept on a SH clic clac sofa ever.y night for 5 years. It finally got stuck mid change and had to be abandoned but it was really comfortable.

Thank you for all your replies. Too many to answer individually, but plenty of useful tips and recommendations for me to be getting on with!

Doodledog Fri 20-Feb-26 10:27:40

There are ones that sort of slide out rather than drop down. They are automatic somehow, so the bottom cushions sort of tuck under the back when the bed becomes a sofa, and slide out when you want to lie down. They are marketed as being the modern version of recliner chairs, as you can lie on them to watch TV in the evening then put them back in the morning to make space in the sitting room.

I haven't seen one 'in real life', but they look good.

Had two sofa beds and only when adult children use them did I discover how uncomfortable they had been. Family being more honest than the occasional visitor. I invested in a Hypnos truckle bed, no complaints and can accommodate a 6'3" tall guest a lot more comfortably

GrannieWalker Fri 20-Feb-26 02:50:24

I have a truckle bed type, that’s just two stacking single beds with the bottom one able to pop up level. My first lockdown task was to make 4 cushion covers that each take either two pillows or a single duvet. A pretty cover over the top mattress and pile the four fat cushions at one end and it makes a comfy ‘curl up with a book’ day bed rather than a sofa.

Grammaretto Fri 20-Feb-26 02:24:17

My sofabed came from John Lewis. We bought it for mum for when we stayed with her as we found her various camp beds painful.

This is very similar and is more comfortable than my own bed. I used it when I came out of hospital with my new hip for about a month and was sorry to have to return upstairs.
