Wall mounted or freestanding bathroom cabinet for a small bathroom?

We recently had our very small bathroom redone. We now have a sink in a wall hung cabinet which makes the floor area look bigger and provides storage. There was only wall space to the side of the sink for a mirror which wasn’t practical however we found a cabinet with a mirrored door which also has lights in, and is mirrored on both sides.. The door opens out over the sink so great for shaving (DH) or removing makeup (me).The cabinet also contains a shaver/toothbrush point as well as shelves. We recently had our small bathroom redone with a shower instead of a bath. I decided on a a small sink over a vanity unit. Plenty big enough for toothbrushing and face washing etc.
For small item storage I got a mirrored cabinet with one large door and one small door. It is very clever as the doors are mirrored on both sides so shelves can be open for access while using the mirror,

I changed the freestanding sink for a sink unit with storage underneath, this might help.

Only a small bathroom here too, loo, good sized shower cubicle and washbasin with under storage cabinet.Also a large wall mounted unit and a three foot free standing unit in a corner.

We have quite a large wall mounted cabinet even though our bathroom is small. The door is a complete mirror which slides to the side over the wash basin. So practical

It depends on whether you don’t mind bending down to look for things. A floor standing cabinet would mean that you would have to do so, as would under sink storage. A wall mounted cabinet brings everything to eye level. I know which I’d prefer.

I have bought an open shelve tall and slim floor standing unit from john lewis which fits well into a small space. I love it, I can fit loads onto the shelves.

These modern cabinets would all look terrible in my bathroom- that's why I'm wondering.

Is it a modern or traditional or "old" style room in the first place?
What are the dimensions and exactly what is in there already?

Under sink is very tidy and neat using up what is otherwise wasted space.

I’m always a bit wary of cabinets over a wash basin as a friend of mine accidentally knocked something out and it cracked the sink. Goodness knows what, as it must have been quite heavy to do that.

I think the trick here is to be absolutely ruthless about what you need to keep in your bathroom. I've got a wall-hung unit with two drawers and what I can't get in there, I've decided I really don't need. We've recently been 'staging' the house for estate agents' photos. It involved hiding loads of worktop clutter (not just bathroom, kitchen and bedrooms too) in boxes, out of camera sight. Weeks later, we realise we haven't bothered to put most of them back. They can go!

I'd go for wall mounted. You could have more than one, just like kitchen cabinets, side by side if you have enough space. No matter what you go for they will have to be secured to a wall for safety. Wall mounted will give more floor space for moving around.

The under-basin drawers that I have are wall mounted so that you can see the floor underneath, it looks smaller than a floor mounted one I think.
I agree with others that the Ikea bathroom furniture is very good, if they have something that you like.

I have an over basin mirrored cabinet which fits into the wall between the timber studs - maybe you can find a tall cupboard like this, so you can have a cupboard that is deeper than it looks?

Retread I’ve a teeny tiny bathroom/shower room and I scoured handmade wood cupboards on Etsy, I chose one from a company and was thrilled with the service and product. I’ve mounted a grey round basin on top.

Several years ago I got a slim, tall unit with cupboard at the bottom and open shelves above. Can't remember if it was M&S or Argos but it might be worth checking their websites.

I have a large wall mounted cabinet it is 65 cm tall, 80 wide and 10 cm deep with 3 shelves inside. the body is stainless steel and the double doors are entirely mirror. It doesn't feel big or bring the walls in because it is mirrored and reflects light too. I got it from a bathroom supplier might have been Victorian Plumbing or Bath Store.

We have a slim wall unit that is fitted behind the door - the door doesn't bang it when opened. It leaves the walls a bit clearer when you go into the bathroom as you can't see it until you shut the door.

We also don't have fully tiles walls - only around the bath and sink. The rest is painted as it's much easier to change.

When we had to install a wet room so DH could have a shower, I went for four wall hung mirrored cabinets which makes the room look twice as big.

I’ve just today had over-basin bathroom cabinets installed. What a different it’s made to the small rooms! Windowsills are now clear and the floors uncluttered. I’m very happy.

If you can afford to splash out a little, I recommend Geberit wall units. They come with/without lighting and I went for mirrored doors. They come ready-assembled. They’re a little deeper than most cabinets, at 17cm, and the shelving can be arranged to accommodate taller bottles. The joiner who installed them said they are impressive pieces of kit!
