New washing machine

Quick update. I have appreciated all your posts- thank you. My new Bosch washing machine was delivered and plumbed in this morning. Done two washes - all ok , so far
so good.

Asking the sales assistant for help when choosing our washing machine, we were advised to look inside for the greatest number of holes in the drum if we wanted a really good spin dryer as that helps extract the water better.

I always buy the store’s brand and have never been disappointed yet. I have a Candy Washer Dryer from Curry’s which has so far lasted 14 years!!

Candy isn't an "own brand" - it's part of the Hoover and Haier family. It used to be Italian (until just a few years ago) but is Chinese now.

I was told that many modern Hoover appliances are essentially Candy designs with different styling.
The Haier ones (more expensive) apparently have a different motor that is super-quiet.

For me the first time i washed 3 cashmere cardi’s When i was hanging them out I couldnt understand what the white sticky stuff was on one of them ..realised it was washing gel tablet as there wasn't enough water to move the three jumpers around and melt it..I also have 2 dogs sometimes one is on my bed sometimes both..and I think my bedding needs a really good soaking when its being washed..

Gosh you were brave washing cashmere cardigans with gel pods!
Did you put them on a hand wash setting?
Put your bedding on a 60 degrees, turn off the machine when it gets hot & leave it to soak for an hr, you can then switch it on to rinse/spin.

Does yours have a sort-of "increase water" button?
I know some of them do...

Why wouldn’t you like a machine that uses “very little water”?
The new machines are much more efficient and less damaging to the environment Why is that bad?

I was told that different washing machine programms equal a race, some get to the end quickly but use more energy and others take longer to get to the end but don't use as much energy, so swings and roundabouts I think.

I should also say that she had a very demanding full time job in London and she had to work Saturday mornings. She never complained and was always a lot of fun. I still miss her.

All this talk about washing machines has suddenly made me think of what my mother went through doing the family wash. Her only “help” was a copper and a mangle. I often think of her when I gaily chuck clothes or sheets in my machine, shut the door, press a screen and hey presto, it’s washed rinsed and spun. She died before the advent of the automatic washing machine, but she absolutely loved her twin tub.

I bought the cheapest Hotpoint, I’d been ill, needed a replacement for a dead machine urgently. Well, it’s ok, but nothing hotter than 40deg, no choice of much of temps or timing. Spin is puny, always use the 1400 spin as well, but it only takes extra ten minutes. However, it’s only
for me, it washes, spins, drains,
no disasters so far, half load takes half an hour, full load 45 mins. Plus ten mins for extra spin and drain if needed.

We have a Zanussi - purchased in December 2023 and it was a "Which" best buy at the time. Thankfully it has few "bells & whistles", and no scope for remote control by a phone App; this was something we most definitely didn't want! Just a simple range of wash programmes which are managed manually. (Switches and dial on the machine.) Purchased from John Lewis: we paid extra for installation and for them to take away our old machine. (It's well worth paying for this, IMO.) The two guys who came did an excellent job, arriving on time & even taking away all the packaging from new machine. Sometimes there does appear to be a little extra water 'sloshing around" but it has a good score for "economy of use" of both water & power.

I just look at the drum load and spin speed and it must have a quick wash program I’ve been pleased with my hotpoint

Me too! A Bosch devotee, they're my go to brand for white goods, so not a lot of help OP. Good luck with your search though.

Another Bosch fan here. Our last washing machine lasted 9½ years; when it packed up I had a look online & found the nearest model to it, then rang our local indie electrical shop (where we'd bought the original): their price was exactly the same as AOL & Curry's, the difference being that there was not extra charge for installation or removal the old one - and it was delivered within 24 hours!
Sadly, the shop closed down a few months ago as the owner was retiring: he's going to be sadly missed around here.

I only ever use a 30° wash for 15/30 minutes so tried to find a machine with as few options as possible… they all seem to have hundreds!

Mine is a Bosch too. 14 years old and still going great🤞. Would defo buy another one

I love my LG WiFi enabled which is really handy as messages you when finished and plays a tune, clothes are very clean and it’s super quiet and quick

We currently have a Bosch washing machine but I can’t say I like it. There is no 50° wash (60 or 40) which is the one I used to use the most. The worst problem is that I lack capacitors in my fingers which means I can press a button a dozen times while I yell in frustration. DH comes along and gives it one press and off it goes. It’s the same with phones and tablets or any other touch screen.

I hope the next machine will have dials instead.

I've just purchased a Samsung which has a 20min wash which is so brilliant &I use it all the time. In addition to that the machine plays Mozarts The Trout when the programme has finished- love it!

I was told by a J.Lewis assistants the the JL brand machines are made by the Bosch factory..

I've got a zanussi flexitime. I can ask it to wash at different temperatures from cold to 90 Deg and still control the length of the wash so a short 60 Deg wash can take just over an hour. I can put on an extra rinse as well. Wasn't particularly expensive and I am very happy with it

That sounds great.I've got an Indesit and it takes so long on 60 wash :2hrs 45mins which irritates the hell out of me.

My Bosch runs on Bosch time in as much as it will say 16 minutes left to run but actually recently I sat and watched it and the 16 minutes turned in to 23 minutes time..I wonder if its a German thing..lol..

I have a Bosch - Never Again! because as soon as I realised just how little water it was taking in - i.e not even enough to dissolve the washing gel type soaps, that weren't even getting enough water to melt them properly..I realised I either had to do two small washes in future every-time, or stand there topping the machine up with jugs of hot water, until I saw everything sloshing around in soapy water..Its a ridiculous plan to save water, as for me its just not working..especially as bedding towels, underwear all need to have a good old hot wash..
