Spider deterrent……. Not….🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️

I have had an "Ultrasonic Whole House Spider Repellant' from Primrose Gardens online which I bought 14 years ago when we moved house.

We have never seen a spider in all that time. We live in a lovely tree lined avenue with a large open green wooded space 100 yards away. And our house backs onto the city's Botanical Gardens.
Which makes our home very vulnerable for all crawlies. But not one has been seen.

We had two at our previous house as it was very large, one on the landing and one in the hall. But I don't think that's really necessary as the sound is carried through the electrical ring main of your house.

Pets aren't affected by the sound (we had/have German Shepherd dogs) and if you have carpeting where you plug it in then you won't hear a thing but you will hear a humming if you have wooden flooring

I couldn't be without it as my phobia of spiders is very bad

I like spiders but my dil is terrified of them and my eldest
GS has picked up her phobia, so I bought some peppermint oil and some cotton wool balls and dotted them liberally around the window sills especially the conservatory and hey presto no more spiders in the house.

I don't mind the very thin ones with wavery legs but I don't like the thick -legged large ones and if one of those Australian Huntsman thingies landed on me I would literally have a coronary.
Its the fast movement that bothers me although I understand that they're just frightened and trying to get out of trouble.
They are useful and eat insects. Each mosquito eaten is a gold medal for the spider. At least they don't leave itchy bites.

I had a sort of perspex box spider catcher, but it used to catch the spiders legs in it when it closed.
Then my grandson broke it, anyway.

Ive seen one that has sticky looking bristles that capture the spider, but that's too close for comfort for me.

I like my electric tennis bat, I'm afraid.

I've always been scared of spiders but living in the country now I have finally found the formula to keep them at bay. If one appears I talk to it and say quite calmly 'you can live here with me free of charge as long as you stay out of my sight. If you insist on reappearing then I'm afraid you're free game for my hunter cat!'.

Conkers do the trick.
Always place them light brown side up along window ledges or anywhere else you’ve noticed spiders.
They don’t like the smell they give out, although we don’t smell it.
I’ve been doing it for years now, and refresh the conkers every year.
It works, and it’s free 😀👍

Just a thought - if spiders are in your house, what do you think that they are living on?
I'd rather have the spiders (who IMO tend to hide out of the way) than flies and other insects.....

Missadventure I totally agree with you. Why would I want to put it in a shed?! It means I won't be able to go into the shed!

I’ve got several different types of Spider Catchers bought over the years but after seeing what a small Cellar Spider did to a GHS about 3 times his/her size I leave the Cellar spiders alone now. If they miss a GHS or any of the others I will grab the nearest Catcher & then evict the caught one at the wild bottom of my garden. Never go in there just to the start & let my Gardener go in & play with all the evicted spiders when it needs sorting out!

We used to be plagued with them but I’ve been putting conkers on every windowsill for a few years and haven’t been bothered by them since

I'll correct myself - if I never see them they are out of sight and out of mind for me.

I bought some of those electric mice deterrent things for my garage and noticed that there were less spiders and cobwebs around. So I put one at the top of the stairs where the cobwebs build up right at the top. I got rid of the cobwebs and after two years there was hardly one in sight.

I've moved it into the bedroom where we used to get a lot of spiders and though they are obviously around because there are a few cobwebs behind cupboards and things we very rarely see them anymore. Which is all I need really. I don't want to harm them, but out of sight is out of mind for me.

Glass and card for me. Trap spider under glass, open the door, go back and collect spider.

Please please DO NOT KILL SPIDERS. Think of all the numerous creepy crawlies that come into our houses. Mrs Spider and Co will dispose of them for you. I have been terrified of spiders since childhood but have forced myself to leave them alone/ or use the glass and card trick to remove them outside, not when it is raining, then I put them in the garage. Try talking to them as you remove them, the fear seems to lessen.

So glad I've got over my fear/dislike of spiders. I was going upstairs the other day, looked down and a large one was climbing alongside me.

Its the "putting them" anywhere that scares me.
As well as the going into a shed or outbuilding knowing without a doubt that there's a spider living in it.
Spiders are the bane of my life.

I remember seeing (on tv) that if you put house spiders outside, they just make their way in again or die. If you put them in a shed or outbuilding they stay there. Happy ending for all.

That's what I need to do, too.
I've tried conkers, and plug in thingies.
My daughter's dog used to run in and hunt out spiders - any time she heard a sharp intake of breath, she'd be checking for spiders.

I have now made my own spider deterrent with peppermint oil and a carrier oil and a little bit of fairy liquid and water put in a spray bottle. I’m gonna spray that round my windows, et cetera.
