Scammers do not check your ethnicity or work record before they send out emails. They just have a list of 1,000s or 10s of 000s email addresses harvested from a variety of sources and send the email out knowing that 90% will be utterly irrelevant to the recipient. 10 % will be relevant and a minute % will respond but they will send them enough money to make it worthwhile.

My father got a few tax refunds over the years.
5 different tax offices were involved with his pension payments.
In the earlier years he got a letter saying he was due a refund and if he would like to claim it to return the attached form.
He did wonder how many people would not claim the money as there were often amounts like £60 involved and that was going back a few years.
I have got 3 tax offices dealing with my affairs at present and there may be a fourth when my state pension is paid.
I have only ever had 1 tax refund and they sent no letter in advance of sending it.
Yes I do get scam e mails. One which stands out was a tax refund I was getting from the USA.
I don't know how that was possible as the only work I have done in the USA was 2 sessions of about 3 days when I worked in London.
I just got my normal salary paid from London for that time and some expenses.

I agree, Flickety - sometimes it is hard not to feel that they deserve to be fleeced. If an offer seems to good to be true, it is almost certainly not true. HMRC do not send e-mails about refunds.

If even 0.5% are greedy enough or desperate enough to respond the senders can make a mint.

I am constantly amazed by the number of people who will respond to these emails and then keep paying people money for 'administration fees' to get the non-existent prize/payment etc etc.

At the end of the day an fool and his/her money are soon parte.

I haven't seen any of those for quite a while... the stuff I get nowadays usually tries to be a bit more subtle. I used to collect the messages, but the file was becoming too big so I ditched it.

I'm amused by the ones from African princesses, who assure me that they will pray for me and my soul... they don't know me vewwy well, do they!

I've just received a very large tax refund from HMRC. If only it were for real . Do people really open and believe these scamming e-mails?
