I agree in principle that benefits to older people should be means tested, for instance I know several people who are retired profesionals and work full time in a retirement job and still get fuel allowances etc. However I work full time- zero hours with long periods of no work, therefore I have a low income, I also can work all day and get nothing as my work is production related i.e. no results no pay. If many of the older peoples benefits (I'm nearly 60) were means tested I and I'm sure many others, would lose out. My income is just above the benefit level so I get nothing but cannot get tax credits as I don't get enough hours. Therfore winter fuel payments and free bus pass would be gratefully received by me. Is any one else just above the poverty line, by the way I have to provide a car also, in order to do my job.
