I once spent a miserable year teaching (or trying to teach) in a sec-mod about-to-be-comp in rural Norfolk. During the summer term, exams or no exams, a considerable number of senior pupils decamped to go strawberry picking. Oddly enough a couple of the farmers who employed them were school governors. Presumably this no longer happens, though when, out of curiosity, I looked up the said school in the league tables, I wasn't too sure about that!
