One of the relatives wants to give me bills from as much as 7 years ago that she says the deceased agreed to pay but never did e.g for shopping when they were out together. Since she was in daily contact with the person, and could sign cheques for her, I said she should have sorted that out before. I haven't completely refused, but what would you do?

Seems very odd.....they should have been dealt with as and when....morally troubling to use old receipts as a sort of savings account.
Who is to say she's not already 'claimed' for them as she was able to sign on the account?

Discuss with lawyer presuming there's one involved. Sounds pretty dodgy to me. Good luck!

P.S. meant to add that you could ask citizen's advise or if no lawyer involved in the will then you can always have a conversation with a solicitor in general terms. If the do not actually open a file...i.e. its an 'off the record' general enquiry there will be no charge. The more I think about this the more I think its very suspect and this relative would have to provide some pretty impressive evidence to prove the deceased had promised to pay....and even then the lapse of time is tantamount to a 'statute of limitations'.

Thanks for your input. I could go down the general enquiry route and ask what would a solicitor do if I put the probate stuff into their hands instead of doing it myself. If they would ask for receipts, then I could justifiably ask to see them. My relative hasn't spoken to me since I said I wasn't really happy with the situation. My other worry is what will the other beneficiaries have to say if I pay out? We've all said "oh put it in with our stuff" or "I'll get that" when we've been out and bought something unexpected. I never thought to keep bills. If it was something expensive, I asked for a cheque when we got back. Otherwise it was just part of the trip.
