Housing in later life

Hello
I am approaching 50.
I work full time in a reasonably well paid job.

I have never had a mortgage and always rented privately. I have been single for a year after the end of a 4 year relationship.

I am currently training for a new profession. If / when I qualify I will be able to earn additional money.

I will never be able to get a mortgage (age / credit issues).

What are my options as older age approaches? I currently live in a shared house because living alone in this city is prohibitively expensive.

I am getting increasingly worried about the future.

Have you considered cohousing?

This was a movement started in Denmark in the 1960s. They idea is that a group of like minded people live alongside each other, each single person, couple or family have their own self-contained unit, but there are also shared facilities -a common room with kitchen for shared meals, a laundry, a garden, workshop etc.

The older womens cohousing association is developing communities for single women over fifty.

The core principle of cohousing groups is developing strong communities which can offer mutual support into old age.

I probably should apply to a HA. I don't know how likely it is that I'll get somewhere- but got to be worth a try.

Cohousing sounds right up my street (ho ho) I will look in to it.
