Codicils

Has anybody got any experience of codicils? We've just had to bail our daughter out of debt to the sum of £5,500 and I want this to be reflected in our wills (i.e. she gets £5,500 less than our son). Can this be done by a codicil or do we have to write a new will? I'm worried about getting the wording wrong.

See a solicitor. It doesn’t cost as much as you’d think.

I'd write a new will. See a solicitor who specialises in them, to make sure it's correct.

A codicil AllTheLs gives an explanation as to the content and reasons for that content of a will.

So as with your situation, your will can have a codicil that states that your estate (or the remainder after any other beneficiaries) is to go to your son and daughter, but your son's share is to be £5,500 greater than your daughter's as she received that sum from you during your life time.

It is advisable to get your will drawn up by a solicitor, especially if it's less than straightforward.

Could you afford to give your son the same amount over say the next year and then the will could stay as it is??

My sister was charged £500 for a small change to her will she wished she’d just made a new one .

*tanith8 that does appear to be a tad steep.

I did say its your own fault for not asking 'how much?'. Wasn't till the bill dropped on the mat ?
