Barclays customer no longer able to use the PO

we have lost Banks and also the Post Office in our village.
It is a big problem as many here do not have cars or cannot drive for different reasons.

I now bank over the internet or telephone as that is all I can do! It's not a very good situation but I don't see how we can turn back the tide.

Why are Barclays pulling out of the Post Office though?

I meant to add I prefer using the Coop bank they are very good over the telephone.

We have lost 3 of the large banks over the last few years. We now have two B.S. and one bank.
The large purpose built P.O with sorting office which had been there for many years, has just closed and there is now a small counter within a shop in the High St. and a couple of the same on the outskirts of town. These however, only deal with a limited amount of what you need.
I feel sorry for those without transport and with limited funds. The bus fares in this area are very expensive.

I have a PO 2 minutes drive away - it is open 7 am to 9 pm every day, weekends included. It is a great blessing as I sometimes have cheques to pay in, and can do so at 8.55 pm on a Sunday if the mood takes me!

What a shame that Barclays has made this decision.

I believe cash will be gone very soon I do still use cash myself but I could manage if it stopped as I internet bank and use a debit card for most purchases except for small stuff

I've been with Barclays for 60 years but never dealt through the post office with them.

Nor me EllanVannin. To be honest, I thought that post offices were disappearing at the same rate as banks, so there will already be a great many people who have access to neither.

DD visited London last weekend and said when she used public transport she needed to swipe a bank card to enter the system and when she left it and in most instances had no idea what the cost of her journey was. Is there now no other way to pay - no Oyster card?

Oh my giddy aunt!! I am laughing so much, I nearly had cause to run for a po aka guzzunder, potty, chamber pot.

Answer to Welshwufe -Using a contactless card on the bus or tube costs the same as an oyster. Buying a ticket costs more and is a faff. It’s all cashless now- much better. You can also pay with a phone app. You hardly need cash for anything these days.

My grandkids don’t carry any cash at all but of course the danger is if their phone or card are lost or stolen my daughter has told them to always have a tenner with them but of course the silly bs have the tenner tucked in the phone
back !!!

I was sitting with three ladies the other day (similar age to me), and not one of them used cash machines or their debit/credit cards to pay for things in shops because they didn't trust this new-fangled stuff. (Whereas I use all these frequently and do on-line banking and shopping).

They all went into the bank and got their cash over the counter. Modern banking was not trusted. One of them didn't even know you could get money out at the post office. And as for on-line banking, shock, horror! I don't know how these poor ladies will cope if banks disappear.

Hi J52, i’m fuming too! The post office at our local Spar was a godsend after the main bank closed 2 years ago, nearest Barclays Branch is 14 miles away. I will lodge a complaint too for all the good it will do.

Speaking as a retired bank clerk, it will be down to profit. If there isn’t any in what is being done, then it is doomed. Convenience for the customer won’t come into it. I read that Barclays has promised to freeze for two years the closure of a branch if it’s the last one in town. I think they will ensure they get out before that happens.

A few weeks ago I took £400 in £2 coins that I have been saving for the DGC to my local Barclays where DH and I have been personal and business customers for almost 30 years. They were all bagged appropriately but They refused to take them and sent me to the post office instead where I had to pay them in then get the value transferred to my Barclays account before I could draw out the money. It made me wonder if the bank are allowed to refuse money? If the Barclays/post office relationship is now over what would I do in future ? I do like to save a little bit for the children for a little treat but couldn’t just pull a few hundred pounds out of the blue which is why I tend to save the £2 coins.

I suspect, Gilly that you will have to present the coins in smaller amounts such as £20, at a time. But that will, of course mean more frequent trips to the bank, as long as you have a bank.
Like many people, I also use my cards wherever possible, even our nearest town has card pay only, parking ticket machines. I believe there is still one coin one.
I do feel that security is an issue, I and my family have been victims of bank fraud, Once where the banks own cash machine had been doctored to clone the card number and secondly when money was transferred internally to another account.
I like seeing who I’m dealing with face to face and seeing the money!

I can’t remember the last time I went into a bank there is nothing to go in for you can get your money out of the hole in the wall and use your cards for everything else
I don’t understand why people are so upset it’s how it will be so best really to get used to it we ain’t going back to cash

I think it is a great shame for those who live in rural areas if there is no cash machine as well. I think a lot of them are being removed too as so many of us rarely use cash.

I know some building societies and Virgin money have started offering in branch only accounts and I suspect that is to make keeping branches open viable. Easy for me as I can get to them but not so easy for some.

Thinking about the environment, as we all are or should be these days, I do hope that you walk, as a 2 min drive is a very short distance Luckygirl
